Salary: £51,799.00 - £54,943, with progression to £60,002.00  per annum

The Role


This is an excellent opportunity to join the UK’s National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD) at Newcastle University, to play a strategic role in leading and developing the Centre’s technical operation to enable the Centre to improve productivity through data by transferring ‘in demand’ data science skills into UK organisations.


NICD has been established to address the data skills gap in the UK that will enable organisations to innovate through data. It delivers a flexible rolling programme of collaborative projects that focus on a specific business challenge or opportunity and transfers practical data skills into the workforce. Using these new skills, organisations can make better, data driven decisions, optimising existing operations or launching new products and services.

You will be responsible for providing overall leadership to the technical team, for managing client relationships, for ensuring project outcomes are delivered as well as contributing towards the development of the Centre’s overall strategy. You will represent NICD as a senior leader to the Faculty, wider University and a wide range of external organisations.


You should be professionally qualified with a degree with significant relevant management and leadership experience and be able to show proven success in the innovation space. 


You will act as a visible role model and must have experience of fostering a culture of trust and mutual respect to develop teamworking and leadership skills across a deeply technical group.  You must be excited to challenge yourself and to continue to advance your own skill set as well as supporting the development of the technical team’s skill set. Energy, enthusiasm, empathy and a positive ‘can-do’ attitude are essential to the success of the role.

Key Accountabilities

This role is responsible for:
• Developing the technical project pipeline - Point of Contact for new client relationships; directing technical project triage;
• Leading and managing externally facing technical operations – supporting and developing client relationships; directing project management and project delivery;
• Leading and managing talent development of technical team, establishing mentoring and continued professional development programmes;
• Acting as a senior communicator and main technical interface for NICD both internally and externally. Representing NICD and disseminating information about NICD and its work at national and international events;
• Creating and establishing new processes and methods where applicable to support and improve NICD’s internal and external activities;
• Contributing to long term strategic plans for the Centre and leading technical strategic initiatives agreed by the Directors;
• Contributing to and developing knowledge for data related executive education, data readiness levels and innovation processes for NICD activities;
• Developing and monitoring KPIs for project delivery ensuring all key deadlines are met;
• Any other duties within the scope and general nature of the grade which may be required.


The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Highly developed knowledge of the principles, theory, and practice of digital innovation projects;
• Highly developed knowledge of processes/systems/services required to deliver collaborative projects;
• Extensive experience of delivering project outcomes in private or public sector domains;
• Experience of leadership skills, management processes, and the application of performance measures;
• Proven ability to lead, empathise, inspire confidence, foster a team-based approach, and build equally effective relationships with internal colleagues and external clients;
• Evidence of developing and implementing strategy to deliver key objectives and of leading innovative solutions and managing strategic planning processes;
• Intellectual capacity and strong influencing skills in team-based scenarios - getting 'buy in' to facilitate changes in behaviour and direction at both a strategic and operational level across organisational boundaries;
• Effective contribution to organisational change, e.g. in a leadership role;
• Skills to coach/mentor individuals in the technical team in order to develop capability, resilience and potential;
• Experience of effectively motivating, leading and coordinating expert effort from own and other teams;
• Experience of leading a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion.
