The Role

 

The UK’s National Innovation Centre for Ageing at Newcastle University has been funded by Government and the University to create a world in which we all live better, for longer. We team with innovation experts, industry, academics and the public, to identify, develop and bring to market data driven innovative business models, services and products enhancing life as we age and developing new economic opportunities for organisations while promoting positive impact on society at scale.

 

We wish to ramp-up the Centre’s Ageing Intelligencetm mission to develop software-based solutions dedicated to the ageing population and their stakeholders. You’ll be part of a cross-functional team that’s responsible for the full software development life cycle, from conception to deployment.

 

We are looking for a specialist senior software engineer with expertise in artificial intelligence/machine learning (ML).

Key Accountabilities

  • To be the technical lead on:
    • NICA’s ‘digitizing the human experience’ project which aims to develop and optimise data ingestion pipelines through the application of ML driven processing to automate the capture, extraction and anonymisation of data
  • To provide technical input into the development of the analytics module of the VOICE global platform
  • Work on custom research projects, providing leadership on approach and methodology
  • Collaborate with development teams, and product managers to ideate software solutions
  • Recommend methods and process that will improve data reliability, efficiency and quality
  • To be the technical lead in NICA projects that fall within your area of specialism
  • Provide expert guidance and advice to the wider technical team regarding the selection and use of software and data infrastructure on a project-by-project basis
  • Provide expert advice and assistance to the wider NICA team regarding the development and scoping of software related projects
  • Maintain and develop extensive knowledge to keep abreast of the latest/most relevant technologies
  • Any other duties within the scope and general nature of the grade which may be required

 

The Person

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • Extensive experience or taught specialism in one or more areas of Software Engineering including, but not limited to: Visualization, Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning
  • Software development experience in a commercial or research environment
  • Well versed in agile engineering best practices, including version control (GIT), test-driven development and continuous integration
  • Track record of developing software that is used by others
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to present complex or technical information and the ability to work with others to understand technical and user requirements
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary technical team
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Desirable

  • Understanding of a range of data manipulation methods and tools
  • Experience of working in wide variety of application domains
  • Experience within the Laravel ecosystem (i.e. Livewire, Inertia, Jetstream etc.)
  • Experience of developing applications that adopt a serverless approach
  • Experience of container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker)
  • Experience of mobile app development 

 

Qualifications

  • Degree within a related field, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or equivalent
