Salary : £51,799 to £54,943, with progression to £60,022

The Role


We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Senior Lecturer to lead and further develop research and teaching in qualitative public health, with a focus on health inequalities, the social determinants of health and qualitative research methods. As part of this role you will be expected to contribute to curriculum development and the wider academic, scholarly and professional requirements of the Institute and the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University. 


The role will involve undertaking and leading research and teaching in health inequalities and qualitative research methods within the Population Health Science Institute, Newcastle University; the development and leadership of a focussed programme of innovative research which complements existing health inequalities research within the Institute; developing an effective strategy for attracting research funding from major national research funders (e.g. NIHR, ESRC, Wellcome Trust, MRC) to build a vibrant research group of post-doctoral and PhD researchers; and engaging with and supporting the research agendas of our regional, national and international collaborations (including the NIHR School of Public Health Research, Fuse: Centre for Translational Research in Public Health, Applied Research Collaboration North East and North Cumbria, and CHAIN: Centre for Global Health Inequalities Research).


This is a full time, open ended post.

Key Accountabilities


1.    To strategically shape the research direction of the Public Health and Heath Inequalities Faculty research theme, and current research topics in the health inequalities team in consultation with appropriate senior academic colleagues in the Population Health Sciences Institute 
2.    To work independently and to take a lead in developing and submitting research proposals to external funders; manage research, ensuring the projects are within budget, meet milestones and the deadlines for completion 
3.    To demonstrate expertise and academic leadership with a view to supporting and developing academic researchers, collaborators and post graduate students in the Population Health Sciences Institute, including mentoring and co-ordinating the work of Early Career Researchers and support staff, including identifying training and development needs 
4.    To create and maintain strong collaborative links with other researchers based in the Institute, Faculty, University, and external partners working in the relevant field of research, and to develop collaborative links with international colleagues working in this area.  
5.    To successfully bid for research funds from prestigious funders To publish in high impact peer reviewed journals and to present findings/research papers at national and international conferences
6.    To produce research and activities that lead to societal impact  
7.    To lead and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment; supervise undergraduate and Masters dissertations and postgraduate research students 
8.    To carry out other management and administrative tasks within the Public Health and Health Inequalities Faculty Research Theme and the Population Health Sciences Institute, the Faculty and the University as required by line manager and the Institute’s Dean 

The Person (Essential) 


Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

•    Track record of success in bidding for and attracting research funding 
•    Excellent record of publications suitable for REF submission 
•    Expertise in design and conduct of research including all aspects of research ethics, good research practice and research governance
•    Demonstrated ability to conduct high quality qualitative research related to health inequalities and the social determinants of health that commands international recognition 
•    Experience of carrying out high quality qualitative research related to health inequalities and the social determinants of health within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and producing research to an appropriate standard 
•    Evidence of advanced qualitative research skills and analysis techniques
•    Knowledge, ability, and expertise to lead and contribute to the delivery of undergraduate and post graduate teaching within the Institute and Faculty
•    Experience of designing, co-ordinating and leading modules or courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level
•    Experience of supervising student research projects in the area at both undergraduate and postgraduate level
•    Experience of successful PhD supervision 
•    Good record of engagement with national or international research networks or institutions 
•    Ability to provide leadership in teaching and research 
•    Evidence of collaborative inter-disciplinary and cross-sector working 
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including presentations to academic/non-academic audiences, written outputs)
•    Evidence of ability, and willingness, to work as part of a team and on own initiative 
•    Experience of working with practitioners and policy makers in health inequalities and the social determinants of health
•    Ability to engage in leadership roles within the Institute

•    Qualitative PhD related to health inequalities (in any relevant discipline e.g. sociology, health sciences, geography, psychology, social policy)
•    2:1 or First class undergraduate degree in any relevant discipline (e.g. sociology, geography, health sciences, psychology, social policy etc)


The Person (Desirable)

•    Experience of supervising and mentoring ECRs
•    Ability to provide advanced methodological support across diverse research projects and student supervisions
•    Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or equivalent qualification for teaching in UK Higher Education 
•    Masters in any relevant discipline (e.g. sociology, geography, health sciences, psychology, social policy etc)
•    Experience of service on grant awarding bodies 
•    Evidence of successful engagement with external bodies, bringing demonstrable benefit to the Institute
