Research Associate: £32,348 to £42,155 per annum

Senior Research Associate: £43,414 to £46,047 per annum

The Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Research Associate/Senior Research Associate in Energy Networks, Markets and Policy.


This is an exciting opportunity to join the school of Engineering to work on our prestigious research projects. This will entail modelling and analysis of the impacts of Flexibility Markets in Energy Networks and how these link with policy decisions and regulatory frameworks. Of particular interest is the transition of Distribution Network Operators to Distribution System Operators.    


This is a rare opportunity leading to the acquisition of unique expertise and exposure in the business aspects of large-scale energy systems. The successful candidate will engage in high quality research in collaboration with leading academics and industry in the field, interacting with various policy makers from within Newcastle University’s extensive links including Network Operators (e.g. Northern Powergrid), Local Authorities (e.g., Newcastle City Council) and Energy Companies (e.g. Siemens).

Key Accountabilities

  • Modelling and analysis of the impacts of Flexibility Markets in Power Networks

  • Design networks and scenarios including scalability to large complex and future systems

  • Investigating impacts of various coordination techniques on developed simulation environments;

  • Development of decision and control processes for smart grid that integrate sources of flexibility

  • Model and analyze real-life scenarios involving the operation of power systems and their interactions with data, market, and social layers

  • Dissemination of results through journal articles, conference presentations, industry seminars, policy documents

  • Managing of large research projects; keeping track of deadlines and deliverables, be responsible for reporting

  • Attending project meetings and presenting the group’s work

The Person 


Candidates applying for the Senior Research Associate post (Grade G) would be expected to meet the requirements of the Research Role Profiles (see above), meet all the essential criteria, and have experience relevant to many of the desirable criteria described below.


Candidates applying for the Research Associate post (Grade F) would be expected to meet the requirements of the Research Role Profiles (see above), meet all the essential criteria, and may meet some of the desirable criteria described below.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • Skills in using modelling tools such as IPSA/MatLab/Design Builder to model complex power systems, energy markets or similar processes 

  • Skills in load profile development, considering uncertainty (e.g. in forecasting)

  • Experience in modelling and simulation of load profiles and power systems

  • Track record and recent journal publications which evidence work of national significance in the area of Energy Markets in Power Networks

  • Skills in research report writing

  • Experience in power systems regulatory frameworks, markets and operations


  • Experience of uncertainty quantification in network analysis

  • Strong track record in publications which evidence work of international significance

  • Ability to provide leadership to small research teams and the potential to mentor junior research staff

  • Experience of supervising undergraduate and postgraduate student projects

  • Ability to prepare funding bids and proposals to support new research/business opportunities

  • PhD or equivalent in the area of energy systems, or ancillary services provision at distribution network level, energy systems, smart grids, relevant markers, policy and regulation

  • Good first degree in relevant field of science or engineering
