Salary: £32,348 to £42,155 per annum

The Role

 

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the ‘Eighteenth-Century Political Participation and Electoral Culture’ (ECPPEC) project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

 

The post will run from 1 November 2022 to 30 June 2023.

 

The ECPPEC project is led by Professor Matthew Grenby in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics at Newcastle University, with Co-Investigators Professor Elaine Chalus (History, Liverpool) and Dr Tom Schofield (Digital Cultures, Newcastle). The project began in January 2020, and will run until 30 June 2023. Its aims are to produce new understandings of parliamentary elections in England between 1695 and 1832, combining historical, literary and cultural studies of the print, visual, musical and material culture of elections, with ‘big data’ analysis of voting patterns as recorded in poll books. The objective is to shed new light on how people, both with and without the vote, consumed and made elections, and how different kinds of intervention in the electoral process affected behaviour and electoral outcomes.

 

You will be appointed full-time for eight months, joining an established project team. The team has already assembled a very substantial database of voting data (transcribed from pollbooks) from across 20 case study constituencies, has collected a wealth of cultural material produced for and during parliamentary elections, and has built a major digital resource designed to host voting records, cultural material, analysis and visualisations of this data, and contextual essays and ‘data stories’.

 

The principal responsibilities will be to conduct further historical analysis of the material already collected, supplementing this information where necessary with additional research, and to write and edit additional material for the ECPPEC digital resource and other printed outputs. Some work to support the public engagement elements of the project will also be required, including work with community historians, schools and the project’s partners, including History of Parliament.

 

It is envisaged that the successful candidate will hold a doctorate in history, politics or a related field (or have equivalent experience). You will be based at Newcastle University and will work primarily under the direction of Professors Matthew Grenby and Elaine Chalus.

Key Accountabilities

  • To conduct historical analysis of material already largely collected, supplementing this information where necessary with additional research
  • To write and edit material for the ECPPEC digital resource, including ‘Feature’ essays, ‘data stories’, data visualisations, and contextualising and introductory material
  • To write and edit material for other printed and online outputs arising from the ECPPEC project, such as journal articles, a joint-authored monograph, and a framework for schools
  • To support the take-up of ECPPEC resources through collaboration with potential user groups, including schools, community historians, and the project’s partners including History of Parliament, the Hansard Society, and the Institute of Historical Research

Qualifications
