The role

We seek a Research Associate with expertise in cultural/political studies and the imaginary, and an understanding of international cultures. You will work on a major transnational project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)--Screening Violence: a transnational study of the local imaginaries of societies in transition from conflict.  The project investigates the local conceptions, representations and imaginaries at stake in 5 countries in transition from civil conflict: Algeria, Argentina, Colombia, Indonesia and Northern Ireland. A team of researchers from Newcastle University, Ulster University, and Bristol University, plus academic collaborators in the target countries, are undertaking fieldwork in each of the 5 sites. Using film screenings, and filming spectator reactions, interviews and focus groups, the core team will ascertain the local imaginaries mobilised in each of our sites to express experiences of civil conflict. The data generated will feed a comparative, transnational study. Research findings will be presented in a blog and a website, seminars, a conference, academic publications, and documentary footage from each site.


The post is suitable for applicants with an interest in cultural studies, international politics, transitional justice or memory politics, who are skilled in cultural/political studies research, have knowledge of research ethics and of the Impact agenda, and have experience of using websites and social media in an academic context. A good working knowledge of one or more of the project languages (Spanish, French, Indonesian, Arabic) will be an advantage, as will experience in film reception studies.


You will undertake research on the transnational, comparative aspects of the project, including variations in representations and expressions of cultural memory of conflict across the 5 sites under investigation. You will help maintain the project website and blog (in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators), help coordinate the project team, and undertake research on the transnational aspects of the project, including variations in representations and expressions of cultural memory of conflict across the 5 sites under investigation in the project, namely Algeria, Argentina, Colombia, Indonesia and Northern Ireland. They will write up interim results from the project fieldwork and contribute as co-author to a peer-reviewed journal article.


You will have excellent communication and inter-personal skills and hold a PhD in cultural studies, political studies, or transitional justice, with proven awareness of international cultures. Yoiu will have experience of website management, of communicating to academic and non-academic beneficiaries, plus an understanding of research ethics and of the Impact agenda. Communicative ability in one or more of the project languages (Spanish, French, Indonesian, Arabic) is desirable; experience in reception studies would be a useful asset.

This post is fixed term for 18 months and the role is part time, 0.5 FTE.




Key Accountabilities




  • Liaise with the project’s Principal Investigator to contribute to and maintain the project’s website, Teams site and blog. Post reports, video clips and audio material from fieldwork. Potentially (if language skills allow) assist with subtitling of filmed footage.
  • Liaise with the project’s Principal Investigator to communicate with the research team, including UK based investigators, international academic collaborators, and international film practice partners.
  • Analyse, organise and archive research data from the fieldwork across the 5 sites with a view to identifying transnational comparisons.
  • Co-author a research article for a peer-reviewed journal (to be defined in accordance with the interests and expertise of the RA).
  • Meet the Principal Investigator and/or Co-Investigators regularly to plan and collaborate on and discuss the above, and to organise workload.






The Person (Essential)


Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • Knowledge of ethical issues in academic research and of the Impact agenda.
  • Ability to work flexibly and co-operatively with others, but also to work independently.
  • IT literacy, including using keeping accurate data / records; ability to use a full range of applications in Office 365, including Microsoft Teams. Experience of developing webpages and blogs for academic purposes would be beneficial.
  • Ability to prioritise key tasks, meet deadlines, and manage conflicting priorities.
  • Native or near-native speaking and academic-writing skills in English
  • Experience of carrying out research within agreed timelines and meeting project milestones.
  • Experience of producing written reports and/or articles to an acceptable academic standard.
  • Language skills in one or more of Spanish, French, Indonesian, Arabic would be an advantage.
