Salary: £30,942 - £40,322 per annum

The Role

 

We are delighted to be seeking a motivated individual to join the Marine Offshore and Subsea Technology (MOST) group, in the School of Engineering, which boasts world-leading expertise, research and education in marine and maritime systems.

 

You will work on the EU project, ‘Sustainable tuna fisheries through advanced earth observation technologies’ (SusTunTech), focused on using ship, ocean and fishing data to develop intelligent algorithms and insights to achieve the project aim of developing cost-effective systems to improve the energy efficiency of tuna fishing vessels.

 

You will also lead and deliver across the full range of activities consistent with the conduct of exceptional world-class research, inter alia; driving and conducting research, project management, liaising with project partners and collaborators, dissemination and deriving impact from the research, including generation of scientific outputs and further funding proposals.

 

You will be passionate about working in a dedicated, diverse and multidisciplinary research community. You will be an excellent communicator with good interpersonal skills, your research findings, and the presentation of your work will enable the group to communicate our outcomes with local and international stakeholders including academia, government and key industry partners.
 
This position is available immediately, is full time (37 hours per week) on a fixed term basis until the end of April 2023.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Processing, curating and understanding data from the various onboard data acquisition systems and relevant external systems relevant to the project – including the bespoke fuel and vessel monitoring systems installed on fishing vessels within the project
  • Selecting and deriving algorithms & methods for processing the data and turning it into intelligent output in pursuit of the project aims - sustainable, low carbon fishing operations. This will include machine learning and other advanced techniques
  • Project management and reporting tasks, including attending and chairing meetings, time and task management, internal and external reporting
  • Wider dissemination of research results, including scientific papers, presentations and contributions to web and other electronic media
  • Participating in opportunities for generating wider impact from the research including leadership in developing additional funding proposals and interactions with other projects and relevant initiatives

 

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
 

  • Experience of data acquisition, verification & validation from multiple sources
  • Advanced algorithms and techniques for processing data and generating intelligence and understanding from the data
  • Presenting and explaining the outputs of processed data in different ways to  different stakeholders (e.g. operatives on board ship vs office-based technical managers and executives)
  • Experience of, or exposure to the management and delivery of research and/or similar projects to specification and on time
  • Experience of, or exposure to the dissemination of research outputs to a range of audiences in a variety of formats and settings (e.g. peers, students, public; journal papers, conferences and web material)
  • Expertise and/or an appreciation of relevant engineering, operational & regulatory topics in the maritime domain
  • Experience of teaching and/or supervising stuents (Desirable)

Qualifications

 

  • Good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject (marine technology, computer science or other closely related discipline)
  • PhD awarded, or other demonstrable equivalent training and/or experience in the conduct and delivery of R&D (for example, in an industrial or commercial context)
