Salary: £32,348 to £35,333 per annum

The Role

 

We are seeking to appoint a talented and enthusiastic PDRA with experience in data-driven statistical mathematical modelling to join our group in developing models and optimisation decision-making toolkit for lithium-ion battery recovery and recycling


The candidate will be joining a team of researchers across six academic institutes and 15 industrial partners working on Recycling and Reuse of EV Lithium-ion batteries (ReLib) project. Please see project link below for more information.

Electrochemical Engineering science group at School of Engineering is recognised as world leading with expertise focusing on electrochemical energy conversion and storage. Newcastle Chemical Engineering is renowned for expertise in data driven advanced process modelling, monitoring and control. Both Investigators: Prof. Mamlouk and Dr. Zhang has brings complementary expertise on battery science and engineering, neural network modelling and optimisation. You will be part of multiplanetary international teams of researchers with access to state-of-the-art facilities.

This role is offered on a Fixed term contract for 24 months with target start date of 1st April 2023.

Key Accountabilities 
•    Produce data driven statistical based mathematical models of Lithium-ion batteries
•    Work with experimentalists and industry to identify suitable model parameters and constraints
•    Build decision making multi objective optimisation algorithm based on industry informed constraints
•    Build visualising tool to show the evolution of key constraints in real time and their impact on optimum downstream solution 
•    Work closely with other researchers on the project within the group and consortium to share information and data to tune, optimise and validate models to ensure high efficiency and performance
•    Contribute to grant applications submitted by others and in time develop own research objectives and proposals for funding  
•    Support PhD and Master students during their research projects. Supervise and provide advice to junior staff and researchers on mathematical modelling practice
•    Produce publications, presentations and regular reports on progress  
•    Interacting with academic members and industrial members of the project partners, providing suitable paper, electronic and oral reporting 
 
Knowledge, Skills and Experience  
•    Experience of research with transferable skills in the field of data driven mathematical modelling  
•    Experience in using appropriate software to carry out the mathematical modelling (MATLAB, Python, etc)  
•    Experience in multi objective optimisation  
•    High level of analytical and problem solving capacity  
•    Ability to communicate complex information (verbally and written) with clarity and to encourage the commitment of others  
•    Ability to design and prepare professional reports and present findings to industrial and academic project partners at conferences and project meetings and write high quality scientific publications  
•    Ability and experience of supervision of junior staff, postgraduate and undergraduate research projects  
Desirable 
•    Experience in neural network modelling  
•    Experience in data modelling related to batteries  
•    Experience in building visualising tools

•    Ensure that knowledge and methodological/technical skills in their own, and related, areas of scholarship are extended and inform research activities  
 
Qualifications
•    PhD awarded in mathematics, computer science, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, or closely related disciplines
