The role


You will be responsible to Prof Muzlifah Haniffa, Newcastle University Biosciences Institute, and will work on research funded by the Wellcome Trust on the Human Cell Atlas including the development cell atlas.  The project will use cutting-edge single cell multi-omis (suspension and spatial methods) and data analysis alongside flow cytometry, imaging mass cytometry and functional studies.  We are undertaking a programmatic work on decoding the human immune system in health and disease. 

The post will be located in state-of-art laboratories housed within the Biosciences Institute, Newcastle University and will have access to excellent dedicated core research facilities. Prof Haniffa is focussed on delivering high impact basic and translational research.  Prof Haniffa and her research group aim to nurture talented junior researchers through to the next stage of their career progression as independent investigators.

Key Accountabilities


  • To be responsible for day-to-day management of experimental work and/or data analysis involving immunological, biochemical and molecular including next generation single-cell sequencing and imaging mass cytometry, in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo studies.
  • To be responsible for data collection, processing, analysis, presentation and publications (writing, graph production, image production and presentations at laboratory and institutional meetings, national/international conferences) and curated storage of experimental data.
  • To operate as a team member aiding other members within the research group.
  • To facilitate general management and running of the laboratory including routine laboratory cleaning, maintenance, equipment upkeep and ordering of laboratory materials.
  • To facilitate other aspects of the Haniffa group in other aspects of its operation, including assisting with student supervision, contribution to laboratory meetings, contribution to web-based activities and contribution to its public engagement activities.


The Person (Essential)


Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Expertise and/or knowledge in tissue processing, cellular and molecular biology techniques (e.g. cell culture, nucleic acid isolation and quantification).
  • Knowledge of next generation sequencing including single cell data interpretation.
  • Knowledge of biomedical microscopy techniques.
  • Basic skills in data collection, processing and presentation.
  • Able to design, execute, interpret and present complex experiments.
  • Experience or knowledge in flow cytometry and multi-dimensional data analysis.
  • Experience or knowledge in microscopy techniques and bioimaging and data analysis.
  • Experience or knowledge with the isolation and culture of primary cells.
  • Histology/immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence experience

  • Expectation and willingness to work outside normal office hours including weekends and to work away from main laboratory site including national and international collaborative visits.



  • Ideally you will hold a PhD in Immunology, Biochemistry, Molecular or Cell Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Engineering (or be very close to submission of PhD for Research Assistant level).
