The Role


Applications are invited for post-doctoral positions to work in the group of Prof Matthias Trost to study how innate immune responses of macrophages are regulated by ubiquitylation. Ubiquitylation is an important post-translational modification regulating all biology, including inflammation and cancer. This project is within the lab’s Wellcome Investigator Award on studying the role of ubiquitylation on the phagosome. The project will exploit the laboratory’s expertise in proteomics, biochemistry and cell biology techniques. Recent papers from our lab include articles in top journals such as EMBO Journal and Nature Microbiology.


We seek a talented, ambitious and enthusiastic post-doctoral scientists with a background in mass spectrometry-based proteomics. The successful applicants will have an excellent academic track record and have published at least one first-authored papers in an international journal. The candidates will have experience with mass spectrometry, proteomics sample preparation and data analysis. Knowledge and working experience with macrophages/immune cells, biochemistry and ubiquitylation would be advantageous, but is not essential as training can be provided.


The positions are available for up to 5 years.  Available immediately, but applicants wishing to start at a later time will be considered.


The positions are based in the Newcastle University Biosciences Institute (NUBI). In the last Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) by the UK government, our institute (then called ICaMB) was 1st for research output amongst all of the UK submitted University biosciences departments and was placed 5th out of 44 UK submissions in the overall scores.

Key Accountabilities


  • Develop and carry out the specified project using appropriate techniques and equipment as outlined in the personal requirements.
  • Plan and carry out independent original research encompassing:
    • Investigations leading to the discovery of new knowledge
    • Analysing data, interpreting and bringing new insights
  • Initiate or participate in inter-disciplinary collaborations as agreed with supervisor.
  • Provide guidance, where necessary, to other staff and students including possible supervision of PhD and undergraduate project students as agreed with supervisor.
  • Present research findings as posters and oral presentations at conferences.
  • Write up research findings for publication and dissemination.


The Person


Knowledge, Skills & Experience (Essential):

  • A strong research background in proteomics or mass spectrometry.
  • Significant experience with proteomics sample preparation and data analysis.     
  • Experience in applying proteomics in a biological context.  
  • At least one first-author publication in a recognised peer-reviewed journal (published or submitted).


  • Experience with maintaining mass spectrometers such as Orbitrap or Bruker instruments.
  • Experience with standard biochemical techniques such as Western Blotting.
  • Some experience with cell signaling or ubiquitylation.
  • Experience with macrophages or other innate immune cells.
  • Experience of presenting research work at scientific meetings and write publications.

Qualifications (Essential):

  • Degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry or a related area.
  • Possession of a PhD (or imminent submission of thesis) in chemistry, biology, biochemistry or a related field.
