The Role


This project aims to understand the neural mechanisms behind post-COVID fatigue. At least 1 in 5 people who only have suffered from mild COVID symptoms report suffering from fatigue after they have otherwise fully recovered - the mechanisms behind this fatigue are unclear. Fatigue can be the result of changes in multiple systems in the brain, and in order to know where to direct any therapeutic treatments, we need to know which systems are affected and how.

 

Your role will be to recruit healthy volunteers (including those who have had confirmed COVID diagnoses more at least 6 weeks ago and who suffer from fatigue) and carry out a battery of electrophysiological tests with the aim of understanding which brain systems have been affected. Some volunteers will be asked to return every 3 months for repeat testing and you will also be responsible for sending out questionnaire in order to assess the progression of their fatigue symptoms for the durations of this project.

•    Present research findings, either at conferences or through publications in reputable outlets appropriate to the discipline
•    May be involved in the supervision, with guidance, of final year undergraduate research projects and in providing support to postgraduate research students or Research Assistants 
•    Will need to work with the support staff and, on occasions, with undergraduate and postgraduate students, and interact intellectually with other academic members of the Institute.
•    May contribute to events celebrating the public engagement of science/social sciences/humanities
•    Develop an awareness of University structures, policies and procedures and relevant issues in the higher education, research, social and political environment


The Person 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

 

Essential

•    Ability to work well as part of a team and rapidly acquire new skills
•    Detailed subject knowledge (PI to describe subject knowledge required) in the area of research 
•    Likelihood of advanced skills directly related to the research projects 
•    High level of analytical and problem-solving capability 
•    Ability to communicate complex information with clarity and to encourage the commitment of others 
•    Experience of research with clear transferable skills and some experience or awareness of the research environment 
•    Presentations at conferences and/or high-quality publications 


Desirable


•    Experience with using neurophysiological techniques (such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, electromyography and nerve stimulation)
•    Previous experience of working in a motor control lab
•    Experience with programming for scientific data analysis (such as MATLAB, Python, R) 
•    Some experience with data analysis

Essential
•    A calm manner, with excellent ‘people skills’, in order to work with human volunteer subjects and put them at ease
•    Well organised, with good time keeping, to be able to schedule subject appointments within the available time.
•    Meticulous attention to detail, to ensure that all data gathered are of high quality

 

Qualifications

•    Good honours degree (or equivalent) with some subject knowledge in the relevant area
