Salary: £31,406 to £33,309 with progression to £40,927 per annum

The Role


Estates & Facilities (recent winners of the Times Higher Estates Team of the Year award) are a very large multidisciplinary team that look after the development, maintenance, safety and security of over 150 buildings across various sites including a wide variety of world class teaching and research facilities, a range of diverse accommodation for over 3500 students across three student villages as well as caring for our beautifully landscaped grounds. We are also the team at the University responsible for catered halls, great food and drink, conferences and events. 

 

We are excited to be redeveloping a new student village and in this new role you will play a strategic role in achieving this.  We are looking for a candidate who can manage the ongoing refurbishment of accommodation. 

 

To achieve this you will work alongside colleagues in Estates and work with our students to understand the aspirations of our students to ensure that we create a product that meets or exceeds their needs.

 

To be highly successful in this role you will have the ability to look to the future in a really creative way and assess ways of doing things differently.  This really is an excellent opportunity for someone to make a difference to the lives of our students of the future.

 

You will have a budget of in excess of £2 million for refurbishment and maintenance projects on an annual basis. You will be able to demonstrate how you can project manage and deliver the changes, whilst ensuring there are sufficient rooms available to occupy and meet our income targets.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop a long term maintenance plan, in collaboration with colleagues in Estates & Facilities, for the refurbishment of the accommodation portfolio, ensuring rooms are compliant and fit for purpose whilst maximising occupancy and availability of room stock. Taking a balanced approach to investing in accommodation to provide a contemporary, homely environment for students to reside, socialise and study, whilst prioritising health
  • Work alongside the Assistant Head of Residences to manage the long term maintenance budget, presenting to the senior management team for approval
  • Lead accommodation representative in the redevelopment of a new Student Village for up to 2000 students, collaborate with colleagues in Estates & Facilities Capital team during the design, construction and handover of the project
  • Collaborate with Project Managers in Estates & Facilities Improvements and Maintenance teams regarding the design and specification of projects to ensure schemes are aesthetically pleasing, durable and compliant with the UUK Accommodation Code of Practice
  • Take the lead role in the identification of project briefs, this will include refurbishment, maintenance and compliance projects
  • Keep up to date on current trends in accommodation interior design to ensure refurbishment projects meet the expectations of future students and promote the health and wellbeing of residents in conjunction with other stakeholders
  • Enhance outdoor spaces to provide social and learning spaces to promote health and wellbeing
  • Attend and report to the Long Term Maintenance Steering Group together with the Assistant Head of Residences, preparing monthly data on spend and progress of projects
  • Collaborate with the Student Journey Manager and Allocations Manager to ensure room stock is managed effectively to meet the demand for accommodation applications ensuring a range of products is available at varying price points
  • Develop a programme of ‘in house’ refurbishment to enable existing residents to benefit from the upgraded facilities, whilst retaining maximum occupancy and income for the service. Manage the logistics and communication with residents to ensure successful completion of the project within agreed budgets and timescales
  • Obtain feedback from students regarding satisfaction levels for completed projects and engage with students on the design of future schemes to ensure they enhance the student experience
  • Procure furniture and white goods in line with the current Public Procurement Regulations and University procedures, including tender, and University sustainability guidelines in conjunction with the Facilities team
  • Contribute to the delivery of the University Carbon Action Plan and ensuring that Sustainability aims and objectives underpin all decision making
  • Contribute to the development of systems and procedures within Estates & Facilities which will facilitate good working practices in the delivery of high standards and the achievement of project goals
  • You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by your line manager. You are required to follow all University policies and procedures at all times and take account of University guidance. You will be required to participate in activities relating to student arrival weekends as well as open and applicant days (these can vary depending on semester dates)
  • You will be expected to manage a diverse range of refurbishment projects.  This will include liaison with colleagues, stakeholders and customers.  You will need to have a high level of self-confidence, excellent interpersonal and project management skills

  • Experience and awareness of sustainability issues in an accommodation environment
  • Experience in a similar role or large scale redevelopment / refurbishment projects
  • Knowledge of procurement and tender processes

Qualifications
