Salary: £43,414 to £46,047 with progression to £51,805 per annum

The Role


This role represents an outstanding opportunity for an experienced and innovative programme manager who specialises in business process improvement to provide expertise on university-wide continuous improvement projects, supporting the senior leadership team in delivering its strategic priorities, particularly around the efficiency and effectiveness of the professional service functions.


You will be a key member of the Strategic Projects and Change Team, working closely with senior leaders as Project Sponsors and colleagues and students across the University to ensure successful implementation of business process improvement projects and programmes within your remit. You will have responsibility for the leadership and end-to-end delivery of university business process improvement programmes to time, on budget, with the expected levels of quality and in accordance with the University’s Project Management Approach. You will also be responsible for developing the maturity and effectiveness of the University’s approach to business process improvement, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement through the education of colleagues, empowering them to enable change.


This role is eligible for blended working, so working hours may be split between campus and home.

Key Accountabilities

        University-wide Business Process Improvement Programme

  • Lead the development of a business process improvement programme, particularly around professional service functions, developing senior stakeholder understanding, and creating commitment, and buy-in to the programme
  • Support senior stakeholders in identifying business process improvement opportunities and priorities through data gathering and analysis to understand the current internal and external contexts, including appropriate benchmarking reviews of other higher education institutions and relevant organisations

        Project Management Delivery

  • Facilitate the definition phase of business process improvement projects, setting out the scope, goals, delivery approach and business case. Consider and evaluate implementation options and develop project plans with resource requirements.
  • Ensure effective engagement with a variety of internal and external stakeholders throughout the lifecycle of the project to understand the key requirements of the user and customer experience
  • Manage the delivery of university-wide business process improvement programmes, from initiation, baseline performance measurement through to benefits delivery, evaluation, and insight
  • Track and report project progress, including project deliverables using the appropriate tools and techniques, managing the project budget, providing effective risk management and oversight, and ensuring the project phases are delivered within the appropriate timescales
  • Ensure adherence with organisational governance standards and frameworks ensuring all mandatory documentation is complete to the expected quality levels. Produce reports and provide appropriate and regular progress updates, identify any challenges and solutions to the Project Board and wider stakeholders. Ensure the correct governance is in place and the relevant management products are developed as part of a controlled definition
  • Work across teams and virtual teams, using proven and effective business process improvement, project and change management techniques and approaches to ensure effective delivery and achievement of business process improvement outcomes
  • Ensure a focus on communications and engagement, establishing and leading a university-wide stakeholder programme to influence and fully engage stakeholders and support the successful implementation of business process improvements. Manage and influence third party and external stakeholder contributions to the project/programme as appropriate
  • Develop and deliver change management and communication plans to ensure effective engagement to prepare stakeholders with the business process improvement implementation. Ensure that the benefits of process improvement projects are clearly identified, defined and measurable with appropriate ownership to enable benefits realisation. Support key stakeholders in promoting the benefits of the business process improvements to the wider organisation and deliver plans for embedding and sustaining operational and behavioural change
  • Lead Post Implementation Reviews to ensure lessons learned are identified along with any residual risks or activity to be managed after the project has closed. Clearly document in the Project Closure Report seeking appropriate ownership and approval

       Building Business Improvement Capability, Capacity & Maturity

  • Champion business process improvement across the institution to share best practice, knowledge and innovation and drive forward a culture of continuous improvement. Support business process review initiatives, through the application and evaluation of appropriate methodologies
  • Actively participate in the Project and Change Management Community, showing innovation and drive through proposed changes/new standards to develop the management of the portfolio and improve the capability of the function
  • Lead the development and roll-out of the University’s Business Process Improvement Toolkit, informed by an up-to-date understanding of the tools, techniques and approaches that deliver results in the University’s culture and context


The Person


Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience of designing and leading a business process improvement programme in a large complex organisation, bringing about transformational service and performance improvement
  • Significant experience in a project and/or change management role successfully delivering projects to time in a higher education institution or similar multi-faceted organisation
  • Demonstrable competence in delivering projects using a range of modern structured project management approaches
  • Demonstrable experience of driving and managing complex strategic, organisational and culture change with a focus on working with colleagues and teams to gain acceptance of change
  • Considerable knowledge and experience of using a range of business process improvement approaches and tools to analyse current, and design future operating models
  • Demonstrable ability to analyse and evaluate business operations, including highly developed analytical, problem-solving, and conceptual thinking skills combined with an ability to facilitate workshops and analysis involving a range of different stakeholders and perspectives
  • An understanding of the Higher Education sector and the political and policy, regulatory and reporting context research intensive universities operate in
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation and influencing skills with the ability to develop effective working relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels of a large, complex organisation
  • Innovative, creative, and dynamic and not afraid to challenge the status quo. Have an enthusiastic approach to leading continuous improvement initiatives
