We are striving to be a world class research-intensive university, delivering teaching and learning of the highest quality and playing a leading role in the economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success. Our core values of equality, diversity, inclusion, social and environmental justice and academic freedom are at the heart of everything we do.

Applications are invited for a position of Reader/Professor in Pure Mathematics within the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics at Newcastle University. We are seeking to appoint a high calibre scholar with an outstanding, internationally recognised research record and demonstrable commitment to providing an excellent educational experience.  Applicants are sought in areas of pure mathematics that complement or extend existing expertise in the School, and in particular in the areas of algebra and/or geometry, broadly construed.  The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics has strong expertise within the disciplines of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and physics, as well as broader inter-disciplinary activities at the interface with data science, quantum science and the life sciences.

Applicants should have a vision for the future of pure mathematics in the School and the potential to provide the leadership to achieve it. The successful candidate will have a genuine commitment to, and enthusiasm for research, teaching and the development of others.

Research in pure mathematics within the School is focused on algebra and analysis (including geometric group theory, representation theory, complex analysis and functional analysis). The ideal candidate will be able to connect to aspects of our existing research portfolio while adding a distinctive new perspective. The School is presently aiming to strengthen research in algebra and/or to grow a new research focus in geometry. In line with our strategy to build cohesion across our broad disciplinary base, candidates who can promote links with disciplines beyond pure mathematics, contribute to our inter-disciplinary themes or Newcastle University Centres of Research Excellence (NUCores) are particularly encouraged to apply.

Newcastle University is committed to being a fully inclusive Global University which actively recruits, supports and retains staff from all sectors of society.  We value diversity as well as celebrate, support and thrive on the contributions of all our employees and the community they represent.  We are proud to be an equal opportunities employer and encourage applications from everybody, regardless of race, sex, ethnicity, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, age, disability, gender identity, marital status/civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, as well as being open to flexible working practices.

Informal enquiries may be made to the Head of School, Dr Nick Parker - nick.parker@newcastle.ac.uk  or to the Director of Mathematics, Dr Stefan Kolb - stefan.kolb@newcastle.ac.uk

Interviews are scheduled for 06 September 2022
