Newcastle University, UK has established an international branch campus in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, Malaysia for the provision of its undergraduate Bachelor of MBBS, Biomedical Sciences degree and Foundation in Biomedical Sciences programmes in the Biomedical Sciences. The Role

 

We are recruiting for a team of clinical teaching fellows for our NUMed, Malaysia campus for the academic year 2025-26. We also have similar posts available at our UK campus (see separate job advert). Based in the Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia campus in Johor, Malaysia you will be a highly motivated and enthusiastic doctor who will contribute to the delivery of teaching for MBBS, and develop expertise in undergraduate medical teaching in an international setting. 

 

You will mainly be teaching clinical knowledge and skills on campus and associated clinical teaching facilities, with some opportunity for development of teaching and learning activities and resources and will be expected to provide learning support, pastoral care and academic mentoring to students, and to use your subject expertise to contribute more widely to the school’s teaching activities. You will not be required to work clinically during your time in Malaysia.

 

You are expected to have an MBBS degree with relevant clinical practice experience, and to have completed your Foundation training (or equivalent) by August 2025.  

 

Additional information:

You will be supported in your move to Malaysia. NUMEd will help support you in your visa application, flight re-imbursements, airport transfer and hotel accommodation for your first 2 weeks. You will need to undergo a health check in Malaysia ahead of receiving health insurance for the duration of your stay. Malaysian visa rules require that, if you do not have Malaysian citizenship, you either have a minimum of three years post first degree qualification experience, or have two years’ experience and successful completion of a Master’s degree. 

 

Salary will be as appropriate to the level of the post-holder on the NUMed salary scale with most people being on year 1, though this may be higher for post-holders with MRCP, MRCOG, MRCPCH qualifications or equivalent. In addition, the cost of a return economy class flight from the UK to Malaysia will be re-imbursed by NUMed. You will also receive a general allowance, accommodation allowance, and supplemental allowance.

Key Accountabilities


To deliver teaching to undergraduate medical students at NUMEd Malaysia within the campus and associated clinical facilities throughout Johor, Malaysia.
 
Responsible to the Dean of Clinical Affairs, you will:

  • Work as part of a team of clinical teaching fellows who make an important contribution to developing, coordinating and delivering the undergraduate teaching programme at NUMEd,
  • Predominantly teach small groups in the classroom or clinical skills room,
  • Provide pastoral support and academic mentoring to students,
  • Contribute to other areas of teaching as appropriate and requested by the Dean of Clinical Affairs,
  • Undertake other academic and administrative duties as seen necessary by the Head of School including student admissions, recruitment, appraisal, mentoring and assessment.
  • To undertake any other responsibilities or duties as requested by the line manager and/or NUMed Management.

 

You may also wish to:

  • Work towards fellowship / senior fellowship of the AdvanceHE which would be fully funded,
  • Undertake the Newcastle University Postgraduate Certificate of Medical Education during this period. If you already have this qualification (or equivalent), you may be able to undertake another Newcastle University PG certificate, subject to NUMed approval,
  • Carry out a small-scale research or audit project, by local negotiation and subject to ethical approvals once in Malaysia.

 

The Person

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

Essential:

  • Knowledge of clinical skills in current medical practice,
  • Experience of teaching to MBBS or other students,
  • Experience of teaching in a hospital,
  • Interest in the development of pedagogy and improving quality in this area.

 

Desirable:

  • An active interest in current developments in the medical education development arena,
  • Attention to detail,
  • Excellent organisation, communication and interpersonal skills,
  • To be open to learning and developing new teaching approaches,
  • Willingness to engage in continuing professional development and learn and develop new skills and expertise,
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team,
  • Ability to manage their time efficiently, including ability to work effectively to tight deadlines,
  • Experience of offering effective student support and guidance.

Qualifications 
Essential:

  • Medical Degree,
  • Registered with one or both of GMC (General Medical Council) or MMC (Malaysian Medical Council),
  • Have either a minimum of three years post first degree qualification experience of work; or have two years post first degree qualification experience of work and successful completion of a Master’s degree,
  • Successful completion of UK Foundation programme (or equivalent) by August 2025.
