The role

 

The School of Psychology is looking for an academic who will build our capacity to deliver high quality teaching in Psychology in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Our teaching is research-led, and you would be encouraged to collaborate with research groups and access facilities within the Institute of Biosciences and Institute of Population and Health Sciences.

 

You will have a PhD or Professional Doctorate in Psychology (HCPC registration is desirable but not essential). You will have experience relevant to delivery of teaching, assessment and supervising under-, and post-graduate students. You will be able to contribute specialist knowledge in your area of expertise within the Psychology of Sport and Exercise. This is a teaching-focussed post based in a professionally oriented School in a Faculty of Medical Sciences.You must have excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • To undertake teaching, module leadership and supervision of under-, and post-graduate psychology students;
  • To offer specialist expertise in sport & exercise psychology.
  • To undertake teaching, module leadership and supervision duties across a range of psychology programmes, including our new MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology.
  • To undertake administrative duties as deemed necessary, including participation in relevant School and Faculty committees and activities. For Grade G/H appointment, a substantive leadership role would be negotiated with the Head of School;
  • To participate in external activity related to psychology, teaching, scholarship and research. For Grade G/H appointment, leadership within the sport/health team regarding external partnerships/collaborations with relevant organisations.
  • To contribute to the promotion of psychology programmes to both current and prospective students;
  • To act as a personal tutor to UG/PG students, concerned with students’ academic achievements, and pastoral care;
  • To contribute to University administration, course planning, curriculum development, the recruitment of students, engage in teaching and scholarly activities and module/programme leadership.
  • To participate in relevant staff development activities;
  • To undertake other duties, such as participation in School, Faculty and University meetings, as detailed by the Head of School.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of current themes and issues in the delivery of BPS/HCPC-accredited psychology programmes;
  • Specialist knowledge and interest in sport & exercise psychology

Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written;
  • Creativity and innovation;
  • Ability to work well on own initiative and as part of a team;
  • Excellent organisational, administrative and planning skills;
  • Excellent IT skills;
  • For Grade H, ability to mentor junior staff;
  • For Grade H, ability to provide leadership in teaching, research or scholarship;
  • For Grade H, proven project management skills.
  • For Grade F/G, potential to provide leadership in teaching, research or scholarship;

Experience:

  • Experience of teaching psychology at under-, and/or post-graduate level, specifically in health and sport & exercise fields.
  • For grades G/H experience in the supervision of under-, and/or post-graduate dissertation students. For Grade F, the ability to supervise under- and/or post-graduate projects.
  • For Grade H, understanding of and experience in processes involved in module and programme development/leadership;
  • A track record in publishing (Grade G) or potential to publish (Grade F) in peer-reviewed journals commensurate with career stage. For Grade H appointment, the ability to publish internationally recognised research in high quality research/pedagogical peer-reviewed journals;
  • For Grade H, evidence of standing at national/international level in discipline;
  • For Grade H, evidence of ability to undertake a senior role in the school.
  • Experience in research and/or trainee practitioner supervision;
  • For Grade G, understanding and experience in processes involved in module and programme development and leadership.

Qualifications

 

  • PhD or Professional Doctorate in Psychology.
  • HCPC registration/BPS Chartered Psychologist status (Desirable)
  • HE Teaching qualification or equivalent experience e.g. Fellowship of the HEA (FHEA) (Desirable)
