Salary: 

Salary for Grade F: £37,474 - £42,155  per annum

Salary for Grade G: £43,414 - £51,805  per annum

The Role 

 

This part-time role sits within the School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences (BNS), part of our Faculty of Medical Sciences who deliver world leading innovation and excellence in teaching and research. 

 

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer with substantial experience in the food or nutrition industry to deliver teaching, and student support for industrial placements for the undergraduate Nutrition programmes in the Faculty of Medical Sciences. 

 

You will join an enthusiastic and vibrant group of educationalists and researchers at an exciting time of expansion of nutrition and dietetic undergraduate teaching at Newcastle University.  Our programmes include MDiet Dietetics, BSc Food and Human Nutrition, BSc Nutrition with Food Marketing and, in 2023, the launch of our new MSci Nutrition and Exercise Science.

 

You will be expected to support students and administer employability activities related to placements, industry experiences, and study abroad.  The role will involve being a key liaison point for existing industry partners, whilst also fostering new industrial relationships.  You will also promote the nutrition programmes through marketing, social media and other ongoing activities. 

 

This is a 0.4 FTE role that will be based at our Newcastle City Centre campus, but will require occasional UK travel to visit placement students and industrial partners. The working pattern will be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Key Accountabilities
•    Maintain existing industrial relationships with food and nutrition businesses
•    Support undergraduate students in their search for 1-year or summer industrial placements/internships 
•    Provide academic and pastoral support to students whilst they are on placement
•    Design and deliver high quality teaching and learning material, resources and activities as part of a team. This should be carried out within external, professional or accreditation requirements
•    Set, mark and assess course work and examinations, providing timely and effective feedback to students
•    Ensure that current research, scholarship and evaluation is informing teaching and assessment practice
•    Provide timely mentoring, academic guidance and pastoral support to students to enhance their learning experience
•    Undertake administrative duties related to the degree programmes and modules as appropriate to role
•    Engage in research activities, teaching innovation and/or other professional activities for the benefit of the University and the discipline

 

The Person 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

•    Experience working in, or recruiting for, the food or nutrition industry 
•    Knowledge, ability and expertise to teach nutrition and other related topics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level 
•    Awareness of current issues and trends in Food and Human Nutrition employment with wide-ranging knowledge and experience in the commercial food and nutrition landscape
•    Excellent written and oral communication skills
•    Have the digital skills necessary to support social media and marketing activity
•    Ability to contribute to recruitment activities for the degree programmes.
•    Experience of working independently and cohesively within a team and contributing enthusiastically to the team goals
•    Ability to work with placement providers to develop and support student work experience placements
•    Experience of providing pastoral support to students

Desirable
•    Experience of coordinating and leading modules or courses in higher education

Qualifications

•    Honours Degree in Food Science and Technology, Human Nutrition or related disciplines

Desirable
•    Registered nutritionist with the Association for Nutrition
•    PhD and/or educated to Masters level or equivalent
•    Recognised Postgraduate teaching qualification
