The role

 

Newcastle Law School seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Digital Law, Policy & Society (Teaching & Research). The appointee would be expected to undertake high quality research, actively pursue external funding and collaboration and help strengthen our research community in line with the School research strategy. Candidates would be expected to undertake research relevant to an increasingly digital society and economy which broadly aligns with our emerging Technology and Innovation: Governance, Ethics and Regulation (TI:GER) grouping. The Law School is particularly interested in research that engages with challenges in one or more of the following areas: regulation of the digital economy and the power of platforms; AI governance; justice and human rights in an online world; online dispute resolution and due process; data and privacy; cybercrime and cybersecurity; data ethics; bioethics; biomedical technologies; and environmental technologies. Newcastle University offers excellent opportunities for outstanding researchers in these areas to engage in challenge-led interdisciplinary research through: the National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD); the Data Newcastle University Centre of Research Excellence (Data NUCoRE); the Digital Institute, which has a strong partnership with The Alan Turing Institute; and through considerable digital policy expertise in the School of Arts and Cultures (SACS); and others.

 

Interdisciplinarity will be central to this role and candidates must demonstrate willingness and capacity to engage across disciplinary boundaries. Candidates should also have demonstrable teaching interests that complement the ongoing development and delivery of Newcastle Law School’s educational provision, including the ability to develop exciting new postgraduate modules aligned with their research expertise.

You must have a PhD in Law or a related area or be about to obtain one. We would also expect you to have the ability to: secure external research funding, publish in internationally recognised journals and conduct research with the potential to create impact. You will be able to demonstrate research excellence/potential as evidenced by high quality publications.  

 

The level of appointment will be determined by your ability to meet the requirements of the person specification and job description.

Law has been taught at Newcastle since 1923 and Newcastle Law School is spread across Windsor Court and Windsor Terrace, alongside the Law Library, and in close proximity to both the Philip Robinson Library and Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms. Key Accountabilities

 

1)         Teaching and Learning

  • Design and deliver high quality teaching and learning material, resources and activities to students in line with School and Faculty teaching objectives and timetable requirements;
  • To contribute to teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate modules, including developing new module offerings in line with programme curricula developments;
  • Provide a range of timely student support to enhance the student experience and achievements. Set, mark and assess course work and examinations, providing timely and effective feedback to students in line with University policy, and utilise on-line and digitised curricula and education frameworks;
  • Provide personal tutoring and pastoral guidance (when appropriate, obtaining specialist support and advice);
  • Supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ dissertations;
  • Contribute to the planning, design and development of modules and programmes to improve teaching across the School and Faculty;
  • Evaluate own practice and presently have or a willingness to work towards a category of Fellowship with the HEA;
  • Provide education for life, that engages, challenges and supports our students to discover and fulfil their potential both while they are studying with us and once they have graduated.

 

2)         Research and Innovation

  • Plan, organise and carry out research, to ensure the contribution of new knowledge, insight and innovation to a field relevant to an increasingly digital society and economy;
  • Conduct research that demonstrates international standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour and ensure all our students benefit from studying in a research intensive, research excellent academic environment;
  • Contribute to the research profile of the Law School by publishing in high quality journals, demonstrating impact, working collaboratively across disciplines, and pursuing external research funding;
  • Demonstrate impact by developing research-based solutions to real-world problems and engaging with external stakeholders to develop the impact of your work.

 

3)         Engagement and Citizenship

  • Participate in organised programmes of outreach/public engagement;
  • Promote the University’s values and support widening access to our programmes and facilities to people who have historically had little involvement in universities;
  • Develop programmes of teaching and/or research which include knowledge sharing with the private and public sectors, and with civil society, with especial reference to marginalised and disadvantaged social groups;
  • Contribute to the development of public policy e.g. through advice to public bodies at local, regional, national and international levels, as appropriate;
  • Contribute to professional development in your field by active membership of learned societies and professional institutions;
  • Take responsibility for a defined management or academic citizenship roles such as Module Coordinator, Personal Tutor, and/or other duties as agreed with the Head of School;
  • Operate as an active and collegiate citizen in the Law School community.

Qualifications

  • A good Honours degree in a relevant subject;
  • PhD (or equivalent) at or near completion in a relevant subject, i.e. strictly within three months of submission at time of application.
