The Role

 

The role is based in the Learning Enhancement and Technology Projects Team in the University’s Learning and Teaching Development Service (LTDS), working in partnership with staff and students to support the delivery and enhancement of a high-quality student learning experience.  You will:

•    Support projects and core services to develop institutional capacity in, and promote the adoption of, Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL)
•    Support a range of TEL, educational development and institutional quality enhancement activities.

 

Newcastle University’s Education Strategy, has four key themes. One of these is a commitment to support academic staff to enhance the use of technology to support student learning. Join our dynamic team working with academic colleagues to embed blended learning and create effective and engaging student learning experiences both face to face and online.  Working in partnership with staff across the University this post is part of the University’s Learning and Teaching Development Service (LTDS). You will have a flair for creating digital content and want to apply this in educational settings.

 

You will be qualified to degree level or equivalent, and may be a recent graduate, possessing some experience of supporting e-learning and the use of learning technologies in higher education, or be skilled in developing engaging online learning materials through digital media, such as video, graphics, animation, websites, audio production etc.  You will have the ability to establish and maintain relationships with a wide range of colleagues, through your excellent interpersonal and team-working skills. Excellent communications and presentation skills, both oral and written are essential, as is a creative approach to problem solving.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • With guidance from the Learning Enhancement and Technology Projects Manager, support academic units, and staff engaged in delivering and supporting learning, teaching and assessment developing their approaches to the use of TEL in order to support the delivery of a high-quality student learning experience
  • Contribute to the development, approval and implementation of institutional strategy, policy and practice in relation to TEL, and educational development
  • Support a portfolio of TEL and educational development activities and projects at institutional, faculty, academic unit and programme levels, in line with the University’s Education Strategy and the LTDS Strategic Plan
  • With guidance from the Learning Enhancement and Technology Projects Manager, work with academic teams to create high quality accessible engaging and effective digital learning content (including text, images, illustrations, video, audio, quizzes, animations, and other digital learning resources as required) for online and blended delivery consistent with established practices in the University
  • Secure copyright permissions with guidance from the Learning Enhancement and Technology Projects Manager
  • Work in partnership with academic and professional services to develop and disseminate innovative and effective approaches to learning and teaching, and on cross-institutional projects
  • With guidance form the Learning Enhancement and Technology Projects Manager, contribute to the design, development and delivery of a range of staff development opportunities relating to learning, teaching (with a particular focus on the use of TEL), as part of Learning and Teaching Development Programme
  • Support the work of steering groups and user groups relating to TEL, and other educational development projects
  • Write and present reports and papers and making presentations to a variety of audiences (internal and external) in order to promote, influence and support the development of a high-quality learning, teaching and student experience at Newcastle
  • Research into and evaluating innovative and effective practice in learning and teaching (including but not limited to TEL)
  • Support internal/external projects to aid delivery of objectives set out in the University’s Education Strategy and/or the LTDS Annual Action Plan
  • Any other duties, consistent with the post’s grade, as requested by the Learning Enhancement and Technology Projects Manager, and/or Deputy Director of Academic Services

 

The Person (Essential)

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • The ability to produce high quality accessible digital media content for online/blended learning delivery (this may include filming, photography, online editing, digital illustration)
  • Digital media production skills, including storyboarding, scheduling, pre and post production and project management
  • The ability to manage and prioritise own workload and to solve problems and use own initiative appropriately
  • The ability to work effectively within a team
  • The ability to establish, maintain and communicate within relevant internal and external networks of contacts across a wide range of partnerships
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communications skills, oral and written
  • A commitment to continuing professional development and to the mission and values of the service
  • Experience of organising activities involving groups of people

Desirable

  • Experience of developing and presenting text and media for online audiences using a range of authoring tools and HTML5
  • Research skills, including the ability to analyse complex data
  • Experience of training and developing others/producing user documentation
  • Experience of the application of digital media tools and production techniques to the education experience
  • Experience of producing accessible digital media content consistent with W3C requirements
  • Familiarity with producing digital media content to educational technology interoperability standards 
  • Experience of applying research techniques in practice
  • An up-to-date knowledge of policy and practice relating to teaching and learning, enhancement and assurance in higher education, in particular how policy and practice is applied in an academic unit (School)
