The Role


The main function of this post is to join a team of analysts identifying new emerging health technologies, recording key information to enable trend analysis and individual technology horizon scanning outputs, including dashboards.


This is a national role and the post sits in our exciting new initiative, the National Institute for Health Research Innovation Observatory. Using next generational digital analytics, we bring together expertise in order to observe and report on health innovation for the UK and beyond, helping shape future health provision.


The Innovation Observatory is a £10M initiative, funded by the National Institute for Health Research and based in Newcastle upon Tyne. We bring together data scientists, text mining and evidence synthesis experts, and information specialists, to provide an essential service for the NHS and policymakers. Our outputs help them make informed decisions about how healthcare should be provided in the future. 


NIHRIO is a partnership between Newcastle University, the National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD), Newcastle Academic Health Partners and the National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA).

Key Accountabilities


  1. To contribute to the delivery of horizon scanning outputs for national stakeholders.


  1. Under direction, contribute to the setting up of experimental systems to explore novel methods of screening and collation of information.


  1. To contribute to the development and delivery of horizon scanning training and advice, liaising with other horizon scanning groups and organisations.


  1. Support the delivery of market analysis and pipeline reports to key national stakeholders.


  1. Managing own workload and prioritising work to ensure timely, accurate, search activities. Where necessary, to engage with managers to identify extra resources to manage peaks in demand.


  1. Carry out bespoke scanning projects within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and to an appropriate standard under guidance of more senior staff


  1. Attend meetings and other events appropriate to the projects/team


  1. If appropriate, contribute to the preparation of papers for publication, disseminate findings at conferences as required


  1. Identify and undertake a programme of professional development, including further training in research methods and other transferable skills.


  1. To contribute to the activities of the Analyst Team at the NIHR IO


  1. Carry out administrative tasks and other duties to support the NIHR IO as required by the Director

  • A first degree in health services research, public health, information science, health technology assessment, biomedical sciences, pharmacology or other related subject
