Salary: £82,096.00 - £110,683.00  per annum, pro rata

The Role

 

You will contribute to the achievement of the teaching goals of the Medical Education programme.  The delivery of teaching will be the key activity for this post.  This is a 2 sessions post located at Newcastle University for 8 hours per week.


The Medical Education Programme is aimed at helping all health care professionals develop as educators, not just doctors.

Key Accountabilities


• To make a significant clinical contribution to the School’s teaching of Certificate, Diploma and Master modules, and specifically for the Current Educational Issues module.  You will, in particular:

 

Quality Assurance

  • Contribute to training and development of medical educators who support the Medical Education programme
  • Contribute to the evaluation of the programme and in particular for the Current Educational Issues module
  • Respond to issues highlighted in student and staff feedback

Teaching and Learning

  • Design, and be responsible for, the academic content of online resources to support those working at a distance
  • Deliver online academic support
  • Deliver a high-quality classroom experience to those attending classroom sessions
  • Address individual learning needs by supporting teachers working in clinical contexts
  • Work with other Module Leaders to develop academic content for online and classroom resources
  • Contribute to the teaching of learning theory
  • Contribute to the co-ordination and delivery of the Medical Education programme
  • Facilitate student group work and individual tutorials, including guidance for self-study and examination preparation
  • Deliver constructive developmental feedback to students
  • Conduct observed teaching
  • Supervise Masters’ dissertations
  • Fulfil the requirements of Module Leadership

Assessment

  • Contribute to the design and development of assessments
  • Participate in the marking and moderation of module assessments

Student support and guidance

  • Meet, as needed, with students for pastoral support and guidance and refer to the DPD as appropriate
  • Contribute to other areas of teaching in the Medical Education programme as appropriate and requested by the Degree Programme Director, particularly in the areas listed above
  • Contribute to the development and future direction of the programme
  • To undertake academic duties as required by the Head of School and the Degree Programme Director
  • To undertake administrative duties relevant to the programme
  • To contribute to the development of cross-disciplinary, integrated teaching within the School
  • Contribute to the University’s well-being agenda by providing opportunities for students and staff to attend mindfulness sessions and training across campus.
  • To serve on School, Faculty and University committees where appropriate, in particular those relating to the Medical Education programme, e.g.,
  • Medical Education Curriculum Committee
  • Board of Studies
  • Module Moderation Boards and Boards of Examiners

Key relationships

  • Reporting to the Degree Programme Director for the Medical Education programme
  • Module Leaders for the Medical Education programme
  • Support team for the Medical Education programme


The Person (Essential)

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience


• Must be working clinically within the northern region
• Must be able to apply academic knowledge to designing educational content and able to relate it to all aspects of teaching in a clinical setting
• Knowledge of online delivery methods
• Good communicator in seminars and small groups and produce constructive, developmental feedback
• Utilise software programmes for classroom and on-line teaching
Desirable
• Directing the academic development of online resources for use within a Medical Education programme
• Experience of speaking in public, including lectures or conferences

Qualifications


• GMC registration, with a licence to practice
• Possesses a Masters degree in a relevant discipline
• Holds a Masters in Medical Education or equivalent qualification

Desirable
• Possesses a PhD in education or an EdD or higher degree in education technology
