The Role
You will be working with Dr. Eugene Tang (NIHR Advanced Fellow) and will be part of an emerging cohort of GP commercial research fellows. Up to eleven fellowships are available nationally alongside the post in Newcastle; one in each of the members of the School for Primary Care Research: Bristol, Exeter, Keele, Manchester, Nottingham, Oxford, QMUL, Southampton and UCL and one other based in a previous SPCR member (Birmingham). Fellows will have academic support from SPCR host departments and have access to wider NIHR SPCR training resources and be part of the wider SPCR network. You will also form a peer-support group, working with an experienced academic to enhance their career development. You will also gain new skills in commercial research.
It is anticipated that this role will provide an excellent platform for you to be mentored and receive support from an experienced academic General Practitioner with the aim of developing your own research interests, experiences and skills in the area of primary care research. Hosted by Newcastle Health Research Partnership (NHRP) Academy, (the career development arm of Newcastle’s Academic Health Science Centre), the Academic Primary and Community Care Unit (APCCU) is a newly developed virtual unit which aims to bring together leading experts within primary and community care systems to build capacity in academic primary and community care within the region. You will also be supported by and be part of an emerging group of clinical academics as a member of the APCCU.
The Project
The fellowships will provide ring fenced time for general practitioners to work with key partners (including the NIHR Research Delivery Network and NIHR Commercial Research Delivery Centres) to enable new capacity in commercial research delivery in out of hospital settings to be developed. One of the aims is to help increase the number of general practices participating in commercial research.
This post is fixed term for a period of 18 months at 0.2 FTE and will run to the 31st December 2026. Fellows will be paid an academic clinical salary (pro rata starting rom £105,504 FTE pending years post-CCT).

Key Accountabilities
• Network widely with regional primary care, promoting and supporting the uptake of the commercial portfolio
• Increase the number of general practices participating in commercial research
• Increase recruitment to commercial studies
• Provide new capacity to support the adoption and roll out of commercial research
• Develop new collaboration between industrial partners and primary care
• Form and enhance partnerships with key stakeholders, including but not limited to the NIHR RRDN, Health Innovation Networks, commercial partners, Department of Health and Social Care, Biomedical Research Centres

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Ability to work well as part of a team and rapidly acquire new skills
• Detailed subject knowledge in health services delivery research
• High level of analytical and problem-solving capability
• Ability to communicate complex information with clarity and to encourage the commitment of others
• Experience of research with clear transferable skills and some experience or awareness of the research environment

Qualifications
• MBChB/MBBS or equivalent
• Full GMC Registration
• Clinically active fully qualified (post-CCT) General Practitioner with license to practice
