Salary: £31,406 - £40,927 depending on experience.

The Role


The UK’s National Innovation Centre for Ageing at Newcastle University has been funded by Government and the University to create a world in which we all live better, for longer. We team with innovation experts, industry, academics and the public, to identify, develop and bring to market data driven innovative business models, services and products enhancing life as we age and developing new economic opportunities for organisations while promoting positive impact on society at scale.

 

We are seeking a Full Stack Developer to ramp-up the Centre’s Ageing Intelligencetm mission in developing software-based solutions dedicated to the ageing population and their stakeholders. You’ll be part of a cross-functional team that’s responsible for the full software development life cycle, from conception to deployment.

 

You should be comfortable around both front-end and back-end coding languages, development frameworks and third-party libraries. You should also be a team player with a knack for visual design and utility.

Key Accountabilities

  • Collaborate with development teams and product managers to ideate software solutions
  • Design and develop client-side and server-side architecture
  • Build the front-end of applications through appealing visual design
  • Develop and manage well-functioning databases and applications
  • Write effective application program interfaces and relevant technical documentation
  • Test and maintain (troubleshoot, debug and upgrade) software to ensure responsiveness and efficiency
  • Create security and data protection settings
  • Build features and applications with a mobile responsive design
  • Work with Data Scientists and Analysts to develop and improve software
  • Conduct analysis, presenting results and putting forward recommendations through the provision of briefings, presentations or written reports, to support informed decision making on improvements to support the strategic aims of the organisation
  • Coordinate digital upgrade programmes with third party contractors, including the design of technical specifications and documentation, procurement and project management of works
  • Champion usability and accessibility

 

The Person

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • Experience as a Full Stack Developer or similar role
  • Experience developing web applications for mobile and desktop
  • Familiarity with LEMP/LAMP stack
  • Experience of modern front-end web development workflows and approaches (i.e. sass, javascript compilation)
  • Working knowledge of server-side scripting languages and MVC frameworks (e.g. PHP, Laravel) and JavaScript frameworks (e.g. Vuejs, Angular, React)
  • Experience of working with databases (e.g. MySQL), web servers (e.g. Nginx, Apache)
  • Experience of working in team, using version control (Git)
  • Experience of working closely with UI/UX team in creating working prototypes
  • Evidence of good communication skills
  • A creative thinker above to develop novel ideas independently
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Good knowledge of Accessibility principles, WCAG 2.0 and overall W3C standards

Desirable

  •  Experience within the Laravel ecosystem (i.e. Livewire, Inertia, Jetstream etc.)
  • Fluent in Vuejs
  • Knowledge or experience of developing applications that adopt a serverless approach
  • Knowledge or experience of container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker) 
  • Knowledge or experience of JAMStack
  • Knowledge or experience of mobile app development
  • Experience of API design/development
  • Experience of relational database design and development

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Statistics or relevant field or equivalent experience
