The Role

 

Two exciting opportunities are available to work in either of the above Schools. The successful candidates will be responsible for managing the implementation of School strategy regarding academic programmes, including the development of administrative processes for learning, teaching and student experience in the designated area. The role will also support the relevant school Senior Education Manager in delivery of the Education Strategy and Quality Assurance policies and procedures ensuring compliance with School, Faculty and University regulations. The role holder will work closely with the Directors of Education, and Directors of Student Recruitment in the School(s).

These positions are both open-ended and offered on a full-time basis (37 hours per week) with an immediate starting date. The roles are predominantly campus-based on the City Campus in Newcastle upon Tyne. Schools of Computing and Mathematics, Statistics and Physics (1 post) – Education Manager focusing on joint programmes across Computing and Mathematics, Statistics and Physics (MSP).

 

The Data Science 2030 Programme (DS2030) is a phased approach at expanding and broadening our institutional offering in data science and artificial intelligence. The conversion programmes are currently being advertised with first student entry in September 2026. The successful candidate will be one of three Education Managers in MSP and Computing, with this post leading on the new suite of taught programmes being developed.

Key Accountabilities

  • To lead, manage and develop a team. This will include responsibility for colleague induction, training, performance management and development, the allocation and prioritisation of duties.
  • To develop and organise effective administrative support for colleagues including the Director of Education (DoE), Director of Student Recruitment (DoSR), Degree Programme Directors (DPDs), Board of Studies (BoS), Board of Examiners (BoE), Student Staff Committee and similar bodies in relation to all teaching, learning and student activities.
  • To be an active member on Boards of Studies, Boards of Examiners and strategic learning, teaching and student experience committees.
  • To manage all student-related activities within the School. This will include coordinating with other teaching support roles to ensure a joined up approach to managing the student experience.
  • To review student feedback and develop effective mechanisms for ensuring this is acted on and fed back to relevant parties.
  • To drive progress and development of all academic taught programmes within the School, specifically regarding the introduction of new programmes and the review and modernisation of existing programmes.
  • To lead on quality assurance processes for education in the School, including internal and external subject reviews and programme accreditation.
  • To work with the Chair of Board of Examiners in an advisory capacity, ensuring regulations are followed, requiring in depth knowledge of university regulations and policies.
  • To recommend improvements or innovate solutions on necessary changes to teaching administration and be responsible for management of change.
  • To ensure that the School’s interests in respect of education are represented at Faculty and University levels.
  • Any other duties within the scope and general nature of the grade which may be required.

 

The Person (Essential)

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrable experience of working in an Education environment in a HEI.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the University’s Policies, Procedures and Regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Quality Assurance and Enhancement standards and practices in HEIs.
  • An ability to assess and analyse problems and suggest solutions; make informed decisions and take responsibility; be innovative, use initiative and work independently.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to tailor communication style to the audience.
  • Excellent planning and organising skills with the ability to manage conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to work accurately with attention to detail.
  • Ability work well within a team and develop effective working relationships with a wide range of colleagues.
  • Must be pro-active and have a ‘can-do’ approach with the ability to be decisive and take action when required.
  • Excellent IT skills. Ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, and ability to type documents with both reasonable speed and accuracy and the ability to manipulate and analyse information for management purposes.
  • Experience of coordinating and managing complex meetings with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Understanding of the challenges and opportunities for the science, agriculture and engineering disciplines.
  • Experience of line managing colleagues.
  • Experience of SAP and MOF’s database.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent level qualification plus experience in a similar role or significant vocational experience, demonstrating development through progressively more demanding, relevant roles.
