Salary: Salary in the region of £38,000 per annum.

The Role


Over the last 18 months, we have reimagined the way we deliver our University IT Services, building a world-class IT department responsive to the needs of our global community. We’re growing significantly and we’ve created new opportunities and made changes to how we work. This role is an opportunity in the Software Development team. As part of the team, you will use the full development lifecycle to create and deliver in house software to support a cohort of 28,000 students and 6,500 staff across disciplines, both domestically and internationally. This involves working on everything from in house strategic systems to research projects and systems to support the student lifecycle including course delivery, student information and result management.


The successful candidate will have knowledge of web technologies and languages including PHP and JavaScript (ideally including frameworks such as Node.js) and be comfortable with using web services, JSON and XML. Experience of working with an agile methodology and with source control systems such as Git would be a definite advantage.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provision the development, deployment, management and integration of web-based tools, technologies and applications which support collaboration, communication, learning, teaching and research to support the University's requirements.
  • Advise on the selection of appropriate technology and functional components to ensure the effective integration of multiple systems and data sources to ensure the correct tools are identified at the scoping stage of a project.
  • Provide 2nd and 3rd line support for digital publishing services to support service user requirements and react to service incidents while creating SOPs to enable Service Desk to resolve frequently repeated requests at 1st line to reduce ticket lifespans.
  • Operate all necessary proactive and reactive measures in place to ensure service continuity and effectiveness.
  • Ensure issues are escalated efficiently and ensure management is aware of issues and the consequences thereof.
  • To assist senior management and other teams within NUIT and elsewhere in the University in the procurement of digital services.
  • Act as a digital platforms SME and use this knowledge to deliver excellence in operational support, project and change delivery, and help in defining the future strategy.
  • Understand the Technology Roadmap and assist in its implementation as directed.
  • Deliver any project or change related activity as part of wider NUIT or NU project teams as required.
  • Ensure that policies, standards, procedures, and guidelines are followed.
  • Any other reasonable duties that fall within the scope of the post, as allocated by the line manager.


The Person

  • Previous experience of working in a software development team either through employment or higher education.
  • Technical background in relevant technologies such as PHP, JavaScript and / or JavaScript frameworks such as Node, Vue, React or Angular.
  • Experience of delivering software development services to a dispersed customer base in multiple locations.
  • Experience of working with third party vendors.
  • Interest in identifying and implementing new and innovative technologies to support customer needs, drive up quality and improve the student experience.
  • A working knowledge of Cybersecurity processes and practices.
  • Experience of providing support to the end user
  • Able to demonstrate focus on customer needs
  • Experience of the delivery of phone-based Apps on Apple and Android devices (Desirable)
  • Awareness of supporting technologies to support processes such as version control and continuous integration and delivery. (Desirable)
  • Awareness of working with an Agile methodology in a sprint-based fashion. (Desirable)
