Digital Content Editor, Web Content Team – Marketing, Marketing, Global Recruitment and Admissions

 

Newcastle University is embarking on an exciting curriculum transformation as part of our Education Strategy 2030+. Through our new Leading Edge Curriculum Framework, we’re reviewing the shape, design, content and delivery of all programmes to ensure our students gain the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to thrive academically, professionally and personally.

 

Our redesigned programmes will place real-world learning at their core—creating opportunities for students to engage with research, industry, practice and society throughout their studies. To support this ambition, we’re looking for a passionate Digital Content Editor to join our established and growing team and help deliver our digital vision.

 

The Role

 

Our web estate is a vital channel for communicating with a wide range of audiences. As a Digital Content Editor, you will plan, create and refine clear, engaging and optimised digital content that supports both strategic objectives and user needs.

You’ll play an important role in improving how content is structured, presented and maintained across our sites, while helping to embed best practice throughout the web design process.

 

What you’ll do

  • Plan, write, edit and publish high-quality digital content aligned to user needs and institutional priorities
  • Optimise content for findability and performance (including accessibility and usability)
  • Support web projects by managing content workflows and helping stakeholders deliver content effectively
  • Maintain and champion content standards, guidelines and governance
  • Work closely with colleagues across the University to ensure content is accurate, consistent and user-focused
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of our digital content design approach and practices

You’ll join the Web Content Team, part of Newcastle University’s Marketing Team within the Marketing, Global Recruitment and Admissions Directorate. We are a comprehensive, world-class marketing team dedicated to supporting our partners, academics and students.

This is a full time position available for the duration of 24 months.

Key Accountabilities

As part of the Marketing Team, your primary focus will be delivering web content for the Leading Edge Curriculum project and may also work across all aspects of our services, including: 

  • Digital marketing and campaigns
  • Digital transformation: design thinking, digital experience, solution development, service design
  • Innovation and emerging technologies
  • Brand and reputation management
  • Student recruitment 
  • Business and enterprise
  • Research impact

Create and edit effective content to: 

  • support business goals and meet user needs
  • be optimised for search engines and mobile devices
  • support digital marketing and social media campaigns
  • meet the University’s content guidelines and standards. 
  • Work to develop and implement an effective SEO strategy in relation to our web content.
  • Where appropriate, participate in internal and external client meetings, planning sessions and wash-ups.
  • To implement user centred content design principles, including web usability, writing for the web, web content creation and user experience design.
  • Use content measurement frameworks to evaluate outputs, continuously assessing working methods and processes and implement recommendations for improvement.
  • Test and approve content as part of quality assurance and workflow processes.
  • Provide support for website usability research such as user testing data write up and analysis, survey analysis and interpretation of web statistics.
  • Use research and analytics findings to inform content improvements for the University website and to monitor the effectiveness of the website.
  • Provide advice and editorial support to the editor network and colleagues across the University
  • Other duties as required to support online and digital requirements.

 

The Person (Essential) 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • Practical experience in a similar role
  • Excellent copywriting skills and experience of writing for the web, including the ability to author effective micro-content, write for mobile and practise search engine optimisation techniques
  • Proof reading skills and ability to sub-edit copy into house style
  • Significant experience of the Adobe Creative Suite and other visual design tools
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of web usability, readability, accessibility and content delivery using best practice
  • Ability to effectively communicate our brand standards through content design
  • Outstanding organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at same time
  • Able to identify and manage internal and external stakeholders, building relationships whilst meeting user needs. You will understand how to work with stakeholders and contribute to building relationship, using evidence to explain decisions made.
  • Strong motivation for delivering an excellent customer service
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with proven success in building relationships, internally and externally, influence and drive decisions
  • Competent at working with colleagues with less of an understanding of digital design and able to help them understand and express their requirements
  • Experience desired in creating effective information architecture for user journeys and wireframes for content design, including using software and websites (ie Figma, Adobe XD, etc.)
  • Experience desired in conducting and applying user research to digital design, ensuring a user focussed design
  • Knowledge of the Higher Education sector is desirable

Qualifications 

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline or possess equivalent industry experience
