Library Systems Front End Developer - Digital Library Services

The role

 

This role presents an excellent opportunity for a Front End Developer who has a flair for creating innovative approaches to displaying a wide range of resources.  The Library provides access to large quantities of exciting content which is used extensively across the University to support education and research.  We are looking for a developer to join our talented Digital Library Services team to help in making content available in interactive, accessible, and attractive ways. The role will interact with a wide range of colleagues across the Library and University designing, developing, and delivering a portfolio of online resources. These resources will include education materials and presentations of digital content drawn from the Library’s Special Collections and Archives.

 

This post is full time, fixed term for two years, and the role is suited to blended working, i.e. a mix of working on campus and working from home.

Key Accountabilities

  • To develop and implement high quality user interfaces that enhance education and research activities across a variety of delivery modes, working in partnership with academic and professional services staff and students.
  • To manage and co-ordinate the translation of the Library’s existing physical and digital content into high quality online education and research resources for use across a variety of platforms. 
  • To support the integration of a variety of Library systems into a seamless search interface.
  • To develop and maintain the resource discovery user interfaces of internal and third-party systems, including the implementation of bespoke customisations.
  • To develop and maintain the Library’s web presence according to guidance from the University Web Team.
  • To manage projects related to the development of online education and research resources ensuring that outputs are delivered to a high quality and within agreed timeframes.
  • To establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • To ensure the Library’s online services comply with accessibility and usability guidelines for Higher Education, and with copyright legislation.
  • To compile and present reports and papers to a variety of audiences.
  • To identify and plan for personal and professional development, to maintain the currency of skills and for the purposes of continuous improvement.
  • Any other duties within the scope and general nature of the grade which may be required. 


The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

 

  • Expertise in front-end development, with detailed knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. 
  • Ability to plan, wireframe and design web products from a brief. 
  • Experience of UI design and knowledge of design software like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
  • Knowledge of UX, planning out user journeys, and making key UX decisions.
  • Excellent team working skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective networks both internally and externally. 
  • Ability to manage and prioritise own workload, and to meet deadlines. 
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, including the ability to communicate complex technical issues and concepts to non-technical colleagues.
  • Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills 
  • Highly developed IT skills, and the ability to become proficient quickly in the use of new software packages. 
  • Experience of working on projects, and an understanding of project management methodology. Knowledge of national and international standards for accessibility and usability.

Qualifications

  • University degree in related discipline or equivalent substantial work experience.
