The Role

 

The School of Dental Sciences is looking for a suitably qualified dental therapist for the role of Dental Therapy Fellow. This post is intended as a first step in a clinical academic career. The post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching within the School on our dental therapy BSc programme and other programmes including BDS as required, will also be required to become actively involved in the research programme of the School and to register for a PhD under staff regulations which will be based on one of the School’s three research themes (Educational, Translational Oral Biosciences, Applied Oral Health).  The post will include funding for PhD tuition fees as well as the opportunity to take a suitable teaching qualification (such as the Newcastle Education Practice Scheme, leading to accreditation as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy subject to satisfactory completion).


It is essential that you have a degree in dental therapy, detailed knowledge of dental therapy applicable to undergraduate curriculum and experience of UK Dental Practice.  You will have excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills and have a strong commitment to develop your teaching and research skills. 

The appointment is full time and tenable for 6 years in the first instance.

Key Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the delivery of an exceptional educational experience principally in our BSc Dental Therapy and BDS undergraduate programmes within the School, but may be required to deliver teaching elsewhere in the curriculum or within one of our postgraduate programmes
  • Take an active and significant role in academic teaching including the development and delivery of lectures, seminars and a range of assessments.  Teaching duties may be within a range of clinical disciplines within dental therapy scope of practice, dependant on the needs of the programmes and skill set of the successful applicant
  • Take an active and significant role in the development and delivery of clinical teaching including clinical simulation. Teaching duties may be within a range of clinical disciplines within dental therapy scope of practice, dependant on the needs of the programmes and skill set of the successful applicant
  • Make a contribution to the pastoral support of students and to the admissions process for undergraduate courses in the school
  • Fully engage with quality asssurance and enhancement processes within the School and carry out administrative tasks and other duties to support the educational programme
  • Register for a PhD based on one of the three research themes of the School and complete research activities under supervision related to this PhD

 

The Person

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Evidence of relevant post-graduate training (for example completion of Therapy Foundation Training, relevant clinical Masters or CPD)
  • Demonstrable clinical skills and experience the scope of practice of dental therapy
  • Experience of teaching in a dental clinical setting
  • Knowledge of general dental therapy applicable to the undergraduate programmes and curriculum within the School

Desirable

  • Experience of more than one area of practice within dental services e.g secondary care/community or salaried dental service
  • Some experience of research or audit

Qualifications

  • BSc in Dental Therapy (or equivalent)
  • Current and full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council as a Dental Therapist
  • A teaching qualification (Higher Education Academy Fellowship or equivalent) or the expectation of completing a teaching qualification while in post
