The role

 

As part of our expansion we are looking for a data developer – text mining/artificial intelligence, to join our IT & Digital Team. You will contribute to the development and implementation of data mining/artificial intelligence capabilities within the National Institute for Health and Research Innovation Observatory (NIHRIO). The role will include the development and delivery of tools to allow the extraction and visualization of text from structured and unstructured data sources. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of world-leading and high-profile insight generation tools.

 

You will be required to demonstrate experience in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, pattern recognition, text mining, artificial intelligence. It is also expected that the you will have experience in writing and maintaining code, preferably using Java and/or Python, and have a Degree in Computer Science - Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing being core components (or equivalent). It is preferable that you have knowledge of web crawling/scraping tools.

 

You must have the ability to develop and implement systems to extract text from structured and unstructured sources and have a good understanding of the digital product development processes to adopt best practices related to the design, testing, configuration management, documentation, deployment, etc. We’re looking for a good communicator with strong analytical skills and capacity for independent original thought, as well as ability to multi-task. It is essential that you are a team player with a positive attitude.

 

This is a national role and the post sits in our existing new initiative, the National Institute for Health Research Innovation Observatory (NIHRIO) a £16M initiative, funded by the National Institute for Health Research and located at Newcastle University. NIHRIO brings together, in one centre, data scientists, information specialists, evidence synthesis experts and software engineers to create a critical mass of expertise in observing and reporting on health innovation in the UK and beyond utilising next generational digital analytics.

 

This is a full time post, available fixed term initially for 2 years, with a possibility for extension.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop tools to allow extraction and visualization of text from structured and unstructured data sources, for example clinical trials databases, academic reports, social media, news databases and patent filings, using commercial and/or open source tools.
  • Provide advice, assistance and support to software developers, information specialists and business analyst within NIHRIO as well as external suppliers.
  • Develop scalable tools utilising data mining, natural language processing, machine learning, and rules based models.
  • Document and test data pipelines for Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning.
  • Evaluate and demonstrate the utility of the text mining about health innovation, locally and nationally to key stakeholders and partner organisations.
  • Disseminate the methods used to develop them at world- class academic / industrial venues and in world class academic publications.
  • May be required to contribute to the preparing and writing of research papers for publication, and disseminate the findings at conferences and seminars, as required.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders, including users of applications, funders, subject matter experts, etc.
  • Attend meetings and other events appropriate to projects and the Innovation Observatory.
  • To act as an internal and external consultant, advising on the development and application of specialist text mining techniques and the analysis and interpretation of results.
  • Carry out some administrative tasks and other duties to support the Innovation Observatory, as and when required.
     

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, pattern recognition, text mining, artificial intelligence.
  • Experience in writing and maintaining code, preferably using: Java and/or Python.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement systems to extract text from structured and unstructured sources. 

  • Understanding of digital product development.
  • Good analytical skills and capacity for independent original thought.
  • Enthusiastic and hard working.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. 

  • Good negotiation and persuasion skills are required in order to fully appreciate, assess and resolve stakeholder requirements. 

  • Ability to interact with people from different disciplines. 

  • Strong team-working abilities. 

  • Excellent time management and ability to multitask.
  • You understand the digital product development processes and adopt best practices related to the design, testing, configuration management, documentation, deployment, etc.A good understanding of REST API.

Desirable

  • Proven communication and presentational skills with the public and other non-academic audiences (e.g. customer facing work). 

  • Knowledge of NodeJS and interest in Front-End Framework (React).
  • Application development within Linux environment.
  • Knowledge of cloud computing, preferably AWS and Azure.
  • Good understanding of data handling, security and privacy best practices.
  • Experience of solving problems with big data.
  • NoSQL-databases (MongoDB) and ElasticSearch.
  • Experience of working with common frameworks such as SpringBoot, Spring Cloud, Maven, Junit.
  • Experience of running manual and automated tests.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science - Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing being core components of your academic or commercial work (or equivalent).

Desirable

  • Knowledge of web crawling/scraping tools
  • A good understanding and experience of using web analytics tools. 
  • Visualisation, data management and statistical tools e.g: Tableau, Power BI, Excel, R, SPSS, Python.
