The Role
The AGE Research Group, based within Newcastle University’s Translational and Clinical Research Institute (NUTCRI), are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Geriatrician with research interests in ageing, sarcopenia and multiple long-term conditions for this newly created role of Clinical Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Geriatric Medicine.
The successful candidate will work closely with Professors Avan Aihie Sayer, Rachel Cooper and Miles Witham and will be part of an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, trialists, epidemiologists, gerontologists, and exercise scientists working in partnership with patients and members of the public. NUTCRI unites discovery scientists and clinicians in the common aim to undertake the highest quality research that translates into patient benefit, real world application and commercial opportunity.
You will have an excellent academic track record including a PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject area, ideally with experience of post-doctoral academic development such as provided by an NIHR Clinical Lecturer post or equivalent post-doctoral experience. You will have been responsible for delivering clinical trials as a local Principal Investigator and will also have experience in the design, funding and leadership through to completion of clinical trials for older people. You will have successfully published original research in field-leading peer reviewed journals and have secured some research funding as a principal or co-investigator. You will ideally have experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level with some experience of supervision of research students.
The job plan will include 6 academic PAs and 4 clinical PAs (the latter including 1 SPA), and the duties will be in line with the University’s role profile for clinical academic staff.
All academic colleagues within NUTCRI are expected to teach and supervise students. The amount of teaching and supervision will be agreed with the Institute Dean and will be commensurate with other responsibilities.
Clinical Service
This post represents a partnership between Newcastle University and Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust (qegateshead.nhs.uk) and as such you will be awarded an Honorary Consultant contract and will be expected to contribute to the clinical services within the Trust Directorate. You will have continuing responsibility for services in your care and the proper functioning of the Department.
Contractually there will be a commitment to participate in Clinical Effectiveness and Audit, for which time will be allocated. You will work according to the current consultant contract. The allocation of time between the various duties of the post will be open to discussion, in consultation with the Institute Dean and Clinical Director.
An annual review of duties will take place with both the Clinical Director and Institute Dean as part of the job planning process. The job plan initially will include the following programme activities:
- Direct patient care
- Supporting clinical activities
- Academic sessions
University research and teaching duties will be arranged by consultation with the Institute Dean.
This post is permanent and provides an exciting opportunity for a clinical academic to develop their career in academia.
