The Role


An exciting opportunity has arisen to provide general technical support and assist with the delivery of practical teaching, including the operation of teaching laboratories in the School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences.


The post is primarily based in our new, state of the art Sport and Exercise Science facilities in the University Sport Centre. The post holder will work as part of a technical team under the direction of the School team leader.


Ideally, you should have a good general level of education, including science subjects (O level, GCSE, NVQ2 or equivalent relevant experience) and experience of working in a sport related environment. Good time management, organisational skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential requirements for this post.


This is an open-ended, full time post.

Key Accountabilities


•    Report faults or damage to equipment and assist with simple maintenance
•    tasks.
•    Promote and follow safe working practices.
•    Understand and follow safety paperwork, with ability to identify and report
•    hazards.
•    Conduct routine compliance tasks.
•    Maintain good housekeeping, assisting with waste disposal procedures and cleaning activities.
•    Contribute to meetings.
•    Make suggestions to improve the service.
•    Contribute to and support change.
•    Assist with stock control, stores operation and delivery of goods to site.
•    Assist with record keeping, inventory and asset management.
•    Conduct duties to aid with movement or relocation of goods and equipment when required.
•    With high accuracy prepare routine reagents and materials adhering to SOPs where necessary.
•    Operate simple equipment following instruction of SOPs and interpret simple results.
•    Set up according to predefined specifications - laboratory spaces in preparation of scheduled lab/workshop activities.
•    Report faults or damage to infrastructure.
•    Set up and operate equipment following well-established procedures.
•    Assist with induction of new staff.


The Person (Essential)


Knowledge, Skills and Experience


•    General laboratory experience required in combination with on-the-job training
•    Manual handling experience
•    Good interpersonal skill to interface with staff
•    Up-to-date knowledge of University waste processes and procedures
•    Experience of working in a laboratory or workshop-based setting
•    Basic knowledge of laboratory equipment or an ability to understand operational instructions on their usage and any relevant safety testing and inspection requirements (Desirable)
•    Manual dexterity (Desirable)

•    Professional registration with an accredited professional body (including HEA) or working towards this on appointment (Desirable)
•    Good basic education (GCSE, NVQ2 or equivalent) including a sport related qualification
