The Role

 

The Faculty of Medical Sciences have 2 exciting opportunities for medical or dental graduates who are at or close to the end of their clinical specialty training and have their certificate of completion of training (CCT), or are within 6 months of their CCT at the time of application and would be considered eligible to be appointed as an honorary consultant in the NHS. 

 

A partnership between Newcastle University (NU), Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NuTH) and Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Mental Health Foundation Trust (CNTW), these posts form part of a clinical academic career development programme devised by Newcastle Health Innovation Partners (https://www.newcastlehealthinnovation.org/) the Academic Health Sciences Centre for the North East of England. They will provide individuals looking to establish themselves as senior clinical academics over the next 5 years with academic and clinical time, mentorship and training to achieve research independence and clinical expertise.

Specific Responsibilities of Position

  • Candidates must be medical or dental graduates who are at or close to the end of their clinical specialty training and have their certificate of completion of training (CCT), or are within 6 months of their CCT at the time of application and would be considered eligible to be appointed as an honorary consultant in the NHS.  Applicants should not yet have been appointed to a substantive Consultant post in the NHS.
  • You will join part of a clinical academic career development programme devised by Newcastle Health Innovation Partners (https://www.newcastlehealthinnovation.org), the Academic Health Sciences Centre for the North East of England. The posts will provide individuals looking to establish themselves as senior clinical academics over the next 5 years with both academic and clinical time, mentorship and training to achieve research independence and clinical expertise.
  • You will have an academic track record including a PhD or equivalent in relevant subject area, with ideally, experience of post-doctoral academic development such as provided by an NIHR Clinical Lecturer post or equivalent post-doctoral experience.  You will have successfully published some original research in field leading peer reviewed journals and have secured some research funding as a principal or co-investigator.  You will ideally have experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and some experience of supervision of research students.
  • These posts represent a partnership between Newcastle University (NU), Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NuTH) and Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Mental Health Foundation Trust (CNTW). Applicants must have identified, in advance of applying, a commitment from one of the above two partner NHS Trusts support to host them as an honorary consultant and agreement to provide funding for 50% of their time (up to a maximum of 5 programmed activities for a full time equivalent, or pro rata for less than full time applicants) for their NHS clinical work.
  • You will be awarded an honorary consultant contract in the appropriate Trust from which you have confirmation of NHS Trust funding for your NHS clinical work at consultant level.

 

The Person (Essential)

 

Knowledge (including Qualifications)

  • MB BS or equivalent
  • Full registration with a current licence to practise, or eligibility for full registration, with the United Kingdom General Medical Council (GMC)
  • PhD or equivalent in chosen discipline
  • Membership of the appropriate Royal College or equivalent professional postgraduate qualification    
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register by CCT in chosen specialty or equivalent international certification or within 6 months at time of application
  • Sub-speciality training/ emerging in chosen specialty    
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and individual responsibilities
  • Leadership and training experience (desirable)
  • Participation in peer review process (desirable)

 

Skills (professional, technical, managerial, practical)

  • Ability to develop, manage and provide leadership to research and clinical teams    
  • Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills    
  • Ability to teach clinical, technical and research skills    
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and deliver on tasks    
  • Provide an efficient clinical service    
  • Completion of a basic management course (desirable)
  • Experience in developing and implementing new technologies (desirable)

 

Experience and Achievements (paid or unpaid)

  • Experience of preparing research proposals and securing fellowships/grant income as a principal investigator or co-applicant    
  • Peer reviewed publications in relevant journals at a national and international level    
  • Evidence of substantial clinical experience and commitment to the specialty    
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the specialty    
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients    
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff    
  • Experience of developing research colleagues    
  • Experience of teaching or training health professionals    
  • Experience of research supervision    
  • Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (desirable)

 

Other

  • Eligible for honorary consultant status with the partner NHS Trust 
  • Provide written confirmation from the partner NHS trust of their agreement to host as an honorary consultant subject to successful appointment and to fund 50% job planned time for clinical work
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other external agencies     
  • Satisfactory pre-employment health screen and Disclosure and Barring Service check
