Salary: £42,149.00 - £56,587.00  per annum

The Role

 

You will manage all aspects of risk management to ensure arrangements are appropriate; integrated in line with governance structures and embedded in the University’s strategy. You will act as a central point of expertise, providing guidance to empower managers to effectively manage risk and to develop and implement the University’s risk management culture and strategy ensuring it remains responsive and fit for purpose.  You will work closely with the University’s Executive Board and other senior stakeholders to identify and manage strategic risks on an ongoing basis and to provide operational leadership to ensure the University’s statutory duties (e.g. Safeguarding and Prevent) are fulfilled.

 

The role is suited to a mixture of campus and remote work and typically involves working at least 50-60% of the week on campus and the remainder remotely. The post reports to the Registrar via the Executive Office and Governance Manager.

 

This is a Full-time, 40 hours per week position.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • To develop, implement and embed the University’s risk management strategy.
  • Provide expert advice on the University’s approach to risk management to support the successful delivery of the University’s vision and strategy.
  • In collaboration with the Business Continuity Manager, be responsible for ensuring that the University’s risk management arrangements are effective, appropriate and adequate and that they are compliant with statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • To be responsible for the continuous improvement of the University’s risk management framework, ensuring that systems, processes and actions are fit for purpose.
  • To provide operational leadership to ensure the University fulfils all duties relating to statutory responsibilities and duty of care including Safeguarding and Prevent.
  • To maintain an overview of risk registers and relevant policies.
  • To promote an appropriate risk management approach and awareness via facilitated workshops and training. Assist managers to develop their own skills in the identification, evaluation and administration or risk management in line with University and external stakeholder requirements.
  • To promote a culture which supports the University’s priorities whilst embedding effective risk management, ensuring the University’s planning and response is proportionate; customer-orientated; adaptable; innovative; inclusive and supportive.
  • To provide support and advice to Executive Board and other relevant committees or groups.
  • To support the Chair of Audit, Risk and Assurance Committee by managing the business schedule, agenda and actions.
  • To develop and maintain appropriate reporting mechanisms for dissemination to Executive Board, Audit, Risk and Assurance Committee and University Council.
  • To research best practice and maintain an up to date knowledge of risk management issues and a network of contacts.
  • To work in collaboration with the Assistant Director of People Services (Health and Safety) and the Head of Internal Audit to ensure a consistent approach.
  • To support the University’s governance function in the development, maintenance and embedding of corporate governance policies and the related agendas.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience of working in a risk management role
  • Experience of developing and implementing risk management systems and frameworks
  • A detailed knowledge of risk management, internal audit and the related techniques and practices
  • The ability to deliver risk management strategies within an HE environment and the associated statutory responsibilities
  • Experience of training colleagues and delivering effective presentations
  • Experience of developing and implementing strategy
  • The ability to deal with and communicate with a wide range of stakeholders
  • An understanding of governance and internal audit requirements

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level
  • A risk management qualification or training
