Salary:

Research Assistant: £28,756 to £30,497 per annum

Research Associate: £31,406 to £38,587 per annum

The Role

 

This is an exciting opportunity to join Newcastle University contributing to a project which aims to develop a novel technology for zero emission aircraft. This post is part of a multi-disciplinary collaboration supported by a large Innovate UK project called H2GEAR, which will develop zero emission hydrogen power technology for aerospace. This is led by the large UK company GKN Aerospace and involves two other UK companies (Intelligent Energy and Aeristech) along with the Universities of Newcastle, Manchester and Birmingham. Newcastle University will lead on part of the power electronics and electrical networks developments and is looking to recruit a Research Associate with an interest in aerospace electrical networks.  


This opportunity presents the successful candidate with the following prospects:

  • The opportunity to collaborate with industrial experts on aerospace and in particular zero emission aircraft.
  • The opportunity to develop novel solutions for power electronics in hydrogen powered planes.
  • Develop an awareness of the current and future needs of the aerospace industry
  • Publishing research in high quality journals.

 

You must have experience in a relevant subject area and be able to work in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team on a local, national and international level. A PhD or a Master’s degree in electrical power networks would be advantageous.

Key Accountabilities

  • Build relationships with project partners in public sector, private industry and academia
  • Work with project partners to develop electrical networks for hydrogen powered planes
  • Use initiative and creativity to analyse and interpret research data and draw conclusions on the outcomes
  • Co-ordinate own work with that of others, deal with problems which may affect the achievement of research objectives and contribute to the planning of the project
  • Present information on research progress and outcomes to Principal and Co-Investigators
  • Determine appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support where required
  • Contribute to the writing up of the research and its dissemination, either through project meetings, conference presentations and publications
  • Work to deadlines and manage, with support, competing priorities
  • Contribute to project administration when appropriate

 

The Person

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • Research active with clear transferable skills and some experience or awareness of the research environment 
  • The ability to communicate complex information clearly, both orally and through the written word 
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas; engineering

Desirable

  • Track record of presentations at conferences and high-quality journal publications
  • Experience of collaborating with industry
  • Previous experience working in underwater technology in academic or industrial context

 

Attributes and Behaviour

  • The ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • High level of analytical and problem-solving capacity. 

 

Qualifications

  • Good honours degree (or equivalent) in discipline with relevance to electrical power networks
  • PhD in relevant subject area (Associate Level) or nearing completion (Assistant Level)

Desirable

  • Master’s Degree in discipline with relevance to electrical power networks
