Salary: - Resarch Assistant:   £28,331 - £30,046 per annum

              Research Associate  £30,942 - £35,845 per annum

The Role

    
We are looking for a Research Assistant/Associate to join the Electrical Power Group, working in the field of Future Energy Systems. There are a range of projects in the group, which could enable you to contribute to: modelling of power networks, particularly in the context of flexible assets such as heat pumps and electric vehicles; modelling of whole energy system scenarios and their implications for policy; and novel methods for sustainable power supply in urban areas with increased flexibility.    

The project will provide you with challenges and opportunities including:

  • Liaising with experts on an international scale across a range of disciplines around electricity distribution systems
  • Interaction with academics, Industry, and policy makers including Network Operators, City Councils, and Energy Systems Companies
  • Expanding expertise and exposure in technology innovations
  • Further developing your ability to undertake, lead and disseminate research as part of a team
  • Developing awareness of the current and future needs of energy systems, including technical, business, and regulatory aspects
  • Improving and demonstrating the necessary project management skills to ensure project milestones are achieved on time
  • Publishing research in high quality journals

 

There is also the potential for career progression to a more senior position in industry or academia.

This is a full time, fixed term post available until 30 September 2022.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Modelling and simulations of power and energy systems
  • Design networks and scenarios, including scalability to large, complex, and future systems
  • Analysis of network planning and operation, including techno-economical analysis;
  • Analysis of regulatory and commercial frameworks for energy networks;
  • Quantifying the contribution of smart grid technologies and embedded generation to distribution network security of supply;
  • Development of decision and control processes, including optimization for power systems that include distributed energy resources
  • Dissemination of results through journal articles, conference presentations and industry seminars;
  • Working closely with industry, achieving impact by helping to translate research outputs into business as usual;
  • Keeping track of deadlines and deliverables, and being responsible for reporting;
  • Attending project meetings and presenting the group’s work

 

 

The Person (Essential)

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • Knowledge of probabilistic methods suitable for the analysis of energy networks
  • Knowledge of optimisation methods suitable for the analysis of energy networks
  • Significant experience in modelling and simulation of energy systems and control
  • Experience in journal publications, or evidence of the potential to achieve this
  • Skills in using modelling tools (such as IPSA/PSCAD/PyPOWER/MatLab/e-MEGA-SIM) and/or modelling approaches (such as multi-agent modelling, stochastic modelling and robust optimisation)
  • Ability to understand techno-economic and market analyses, regulatory and frameworks, and policies

Desirable

  • Skills in the analysis of data related to energy system operation
  • Ability to present information effectively, writing technical reports and presenting at meetings and conferences
  • Experience in analysis of energy system markets and relevant operations

 

Attributes and Behaviour

  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate at all levels, along with good team working skills
  • Ability to converse effectively and interact well within a team
  • Experience of adapting own skills to new circumstances

Desirable

  • The ability to work autonomously


Qualifications

  • PhD, or working towards, in area of research within energy systems
