Salary: £43,414 to £46,047 with progression to £51,805 per annum

The Role

 

The Institute of Electrification and Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing (IESAM) is a consortium which will develop a flexible, high-quality Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD) training pipeline. The consortium, led by Newcastle University, consists of the North East Institute of Technology (a partnership of Further Education colleges, Newcastle University and industry led by New College Durham) and other universities and colleges in the region. 

 

As Project Manager, you will provide leadership and strategic direction for the IESAM project working in close partnership with Newcastle University academic leads, as well as all consortia partners. You will be educated to Degree level (or equivalent) and hold a Project Management qualification. Previous experience in project, risk and financial management is essential.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead and manage the IESAM project working in close partnership with Newcastle University academic leads, as well as all consortia partners. To be the first point of contact for IESAM
  • Contribute to vision, strategy and future funding bids, for Electrification and Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing
  • Lead, manage and develop a team of administrative colleagues ensuring that they are deployed efficiently to deliver a customer-orientated service to all colleagues and external partners
  • Manage the project in adherence with organisational governance standards and frameworks ensuring all mandatory documentation is complete to the expected quality level
  • Facilitate the definition of project scope, goals, deliverables and tasks, and develop future business cases where appropriate. Develop full scale project plans and resource requirements. Track project deliverables using the appropriate tools and techniques and ensure that the project phases are delivered within the appropriate timescales
  • Develop, deliver and maintain a communication strategy/plan for IESAM in order to ensure effective and timely engagement to prepare stakeholders impacted by the project for the change. Ensure that the benefits of the project activities are clearly identified, defined and measurable with appropriate ownership to enable benefits realisation. Support key stakeholders in promoting the benefits of the project to the wider organisation
  • Financially administer the project ensuring activities are conducted within budget, including developing forecasts, budgets, and financial reports. Control expenditure within tolerance and monitor the costs against project deliverables. Govern the expenditure of the project fund to ensure that collaborative institutions deliver within their contractual agreements. Ensure compliance with funder requirements
  • Provide effective risk/issue management ensuring ownership of mitigating activities whilst providing recommendations and initiating corrective action as appropriate
  • Produce reports and provide regular updates to the appropriate University/Faculty/School Committees to accurately represent project progress, identify any challenges and solutions to the Project Board and wider stakeholders
  • Lead Post Implementation Reviews to ensure that lessons learned are identified along with any residual risks or activity to be managed after the project has closed. Clearly document in the Project Closure Report seeking appropriate ownership and approval. Plan to sustain the IESAM provision beyond the award period
  • Oversee the development and production of marketing materials and other resources about the project for use with a variety of key audiences
  • Represent IESAM at national conferences and associated events. Plan and host effective events designed for appropriate audience and delivered to ensure that the overarching ambitions of the projects are met
  • Develop extensive and wide-raging relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders at a senior level. Manage and influence external stakeholder contributions to the project as appropriate
  • Any other duties within the scope and general nature of the grade which may be required

 

The Person

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience in a project management role, successfully delivering projects to time in a higher education institution or similar multi-faceted organisation
  • Knowledge and experience of various project methodologies
  • Experience in Risk Management and Financial Management and Reporting
  • Proven ability to lead a professional services team, inspiring confidence and fostering a team-based approach
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation and influencing skills with the ability to develop effective working relationships and influence stakeholders

Desirable

  • Knowledge of electrification technologies including power electronics, electric machines and drives
  • Understanding of Government strategy and policies around education, skills and lifelong learning

Qualifications

  • Degree and/or relevant professional qualification
  • Project Management qualification (e.g. PRINCE2 or equivalent)
  • Full driving licence; willingness and availability to work unsocial hours when required (evenings and weekends); occasional travel in the UK and/or overseas sometimes requiring overnight stays
