The School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University, seeks to appoint an outstanding Sociologist in any area of Sociology. Our current research strengths are evident in our research clusters (Power, Inequalities and Citizenship; Identities, Embodiments and Selves; Imagining Pasts and Futures) and our research centre PEALS (Policy, Ethics and Life Sciences) which provide the foundations for the unit’s vibrant collective research endeavour and culture. Our strong REF result in 2014 (13th in the Sociology Panel, with 72% of our research activity ranked 4*/3*) provides clear evidence of the depth of our research and provides the foundations from which we seek to continue to develop and grow.


We seek to appoint a colleague to the role of Professor of Sociology. You will have a highly visible research leadership presence in the Sociology unit, both by pursuing your own scholarship, actively fostering a collaborative approach to research and through active mentoring of junior colleagues; you will be having an impact on key aspects of the future of the discipline; and will deliver excellent teaching.

You will have a track record of shaping sociological research agendas, pursuing research income, producing 3* and 4* REF outputs, pursuing impact activities, and an international reputation in your research field. With a clear knowledge of, and evidenced expertise in, engagement and impact activities, you will have an international reputation in Sociology. We seek someone who is keen to work across the range of activities outlined above and in return you will join a collegiate, vibrant, and friendly unit.
