Salary: £42,149 to £44,706 with progression to £50,296 per annum

The Role

 

NICA is looking for a senior manager to play a pivotal role in developing critical services and commercial projects. Reporting to the Chief Operation Officer (COO) and as part of the Service Development team, you will work closely with a range of internal colleagues, our partners and internal and external stakeholders to manage the customer relationship from initial enquiry through to final contracts, including advising on and shaping innovative transactional approaches to project offerings and delivery including joint-ventures and equity deals.

 

You will have proven experience in scoping and costing commercial and grant-funded projects and producing high-quality client proposals. You will recognise the importance of high-quality customer service. You will have strong skills and proven success in project management. You will be comfortable with and experienced in innovative approaches to venture building, deal-making and differing approaches to valuing, resourcing and pricing project delivery. Working with cross-functional and collaborative teams and environments and championing the organisation’s values and guiding principles will come naturally to you. Ideally, you will also have an excellent financial and legal business background.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage and coordinate customer relationships, particularly the scoping process for projects; lead the development of projects and offerings, working with the delivery manager and NICA’s delivery teams to create and scope client proposals to required deadlines
  • Lead on maintaining a thorough and up-to-date understanding of different innovative approaches to recompensing the delivery of NICA’s products and services to refine and improve the existing offerings and contribute to developing new services and consultancy offerings
  • Take responsibility for managing the bid-writing and submission process for grant funding, including bid-writing, management of external consultants and liaising with relevant University academic and pre-award staff
  • Take the lead on the transition from award to delivery for funded projects
  • Drive prospects through initial scoping to contract award; support NICA staff to navigate commercial standard contract requirements, working closely with the University’s Legal and Commercial departments
  • Maintain a working knowledge of commercial, legal, ethical, geographical and political issues and their application relevant to the role, ensuring compliance with local and international laws (e.g. data protection/privacy, ethics, trademarking), and sharing this with the NICA team
  • Work with NICA COO and NICA Directors to develop and pilot non-standard contract types, e.g. spin-ins, venture building and revenue sharing agreements and licences
  • Contribute to NICA’s ‘go / no go’ process for new opportunities
  • Work with the Commercial Finance Manager to track and monitor the new business pipeline and to help develop models for costing demand/capacity requirements
  • Work with the NICA Directors and delivery teams at the scoping stage to identify resource requirements about current workloads and priorities within the team and across programmes to ensure effective delivery, including key milestones, objectives and outputs
  • Support the ongoing integration of NICA with the University’s Vision and Strategy by developing strong working relationships with the senior management team, professional services and academic units
  • Take responsibility for your professional development and continued learning
  • Be NICA’s corporate values ambassador, a team leader, and an example for other team members and new staff in representing NICA’s Ageing Intelligence® mission, ambitions, values and ethics

The Person

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience in working with commercial clients to scope projects introducing new products and services, with a strong focus on maintaining and developing credibility in the market
  • Familiarity with non-standard contract types and innovative approaches to revenue transactions, e.g. spin-ins and revenue sharing agreements, IP management, generation, protection, monetisation and licences
  • Proven experience in financial management, project costing, resource planning and budgeting
  • Experience in working across complex projects and organisations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with senior management and other departments across various organisations
  • Outstanding negotiation skills and strong influencing skills
  • Analytical mind, problem-solving attitude and demonstrable ability to undertake initiatives, prioritise and plan appropriately within a strategic framework
  • Proven track record of delivering professional services in an innovative environment
  • Knowledge of NICA and VOICE and understanding of the external environment in which NICA operates

Desirable

  • Experience in commercial contracting within an HEI environment

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level and/or with substantial leadership experience
  • Programme and/or project management experience
