The role

 

The School of Natural and Environmental Science (SNES) will appoint a Lecturer in Sustainable Biotechnology to conduct research and research-led teaching. The appointee will also support the development of a Sustainable Biotechnology Research Ecosystem comprising industrial and academic partners. 

 

This post will strengthen and extend an important strategic relationship with a major industrial partner whose success in developing solutions to globally important societal challenges relies on biotechnological innovation. An important aspect of this post is to coordinate the research and teaching aspects of this relationship to mutual benefit. Applicants should have expertise in biotechnology and related areas and a record of accomplishment in harnessing bio-resources for diverse applications. 

 

SNES is a highly interdisciplinary research environment and we especially value the ability to embrace this to develop enabling technology, innovative research and exciting teaching content. You will be expected to promote the School and University at both national and international levels as a centre of excellence for research and teaching and contribute to specific academic administrative roles as defined by senior management.

Key Accountabilities

  • To support the development of a Sustainable Biotechnology Research Ecosystem focused on but not restricted to, the North East of England. The ecosystem will bring together a critical mass of PhDs, post docs, group leaders and industry partners.
  • To supervise individual postgraduate students and support the coordination (research synergies and training) of a wider network of students within the ecosystem.
  • To exploit the multidisciplinary research expertise of SNES to drive innovation in sustainable biotechnology.
  • To contribute to an internationally visible research profile that delivers impact in the area of sustainable biotechnology.
  • To deliver high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in sustainable biotechnology and related areas as directed by the Head of School.
  • To complete and pass the teaching and learning University training programme (NEPS) or to have an equivalent qualification.
  • To conduct and publish high quality research in peer reviewed journals.
  • To be a member of relevant academic and teaching groups, supporting collective activity in teaching and research. 
  • To represent the School and University at national and international meetings and conferences  to disseminate research and/or scholarship outputs.
  • To participate in the management and administration of relevant modules within the School and contribute to the development of new initiatives in these areas.
  • To provide mentoring, academic guidance and pastoral support to students in support of their learning experience.
  • To act in a collegiate manner, making a positive contribution to maintaining and enhancing a working environment that upholds equality, diversity and inclusivity.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

The Person (Essential)

 

  • Excellent interpersonal, management skills and be able to communicate effectively and exchange knowledge to develop research networks across disciplines and sectors.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with industrial partners and the scientific vision to develop innovative research programmes.
  • An ability to develop and integrate advanced technology platforms that harness bio-molecular resources for sustainable solutions to challenges relevant to industry and society.
  • Knowledge of the funding landscape and experience applying for grants with industry partners.
  • Research and teaching experience relevant to sustainable biotechnology and the ability to develop exciting teaching content.
  • A track record of published research in biotechnology and interdisciplinary subject areas.
  • The ability to inspire research collaborators and students and promote SNES’ strengths in interdisciplinary biotechnology.
  • Experience of presenting at national and international conferences and meetings.

 

The Person (Desirable)

  • Research interests in industrial enzymes, molecular probes, polysaccharides, biofilms, and high-throughput screening technologies including microarrays.
  • Experience of supervising staff and postgraduate students to successful completion.
  • Experience of lecturing, running seminars and a range of other innovative teaching techniques, assessment and supervising research projects.
  • Experience of providing mentoring, academic guidance and pastoral support to students.
  • Good networking skills and the ability to develop productive links with fellow professionals from other organisations and agencies with whom the University interacts.
  • Willingness to contribute to ongoing outreach activities that may include visits, public lectures and contributions to events and summer schools.

Qualifications

  • PhD in biology, biotechnology or relevant field.
