The Role

The work of the Combined Honours Centre focuses on managing the Combined Honours undergraduate degree programme, and supporting incoming Study Abroad students. Combined Honours students study two or three subjects from a range of over twenty drawn from the Faculty of HaSS. Recent growth has resulted in the Centre supporting 600 plus students.


The Centre is supported by a Director and a Deputy Director; the Centre Administrator, the Student Engagement Coordinator, the Learning & Teaching Assistant, and three Lecturers. The Centre has an international reputation for its active student engagement practices and curriculum, particularly its leading work on students as partners.


This is a fixed term post for 3 years

Key Accountabilities


  • Undertake teaching across the Combined Honours curriculum; to include the supervision of student project based undergraduate modules.
  • Support the Director and Deputy Director in the development of the Combined Honours curriculum at module and programme level.
  • Provide programme management for one of the programme stages.
  • Act as Personal Tutor to some students on the programme.
  • Lead the student engagement strategy for the Centre (managing and reviewing all student engagement and working with students in partnership schemes and leading on new initiatives).  Partnership schemes include Peer Mentoring and Peer-Assisted Study Support; and acting as the Staff Facilitator for the Combined Honours Student Staff Committee (SSC).  This area of leadership also involves managing, supporting and developing the Student Engagement Co-ordinator postholder in the Centre.
  • Engage in academic scholarship that contributes to the goals of the Centre and/or University.  In particular, to gather and analyse evaluative evidence on the student experience and working with students as partners, and the effectiveness of practice. To disseminate good practice across the University and externally, and to contribute to conferences and publications.
  • Act as the Academic Lead for Employability & Entrepreneurship, and in all areas of alumni relations for the Centre, and attend meetings in those capacities.
  • Carry out administrative duties as assigned by the Director and Deputy Director (such as providing support for incoming and outgoing Study Abroad provision in the Centre).


Person Specification


Knowledge, Skills and Experience  


  • Experience of undergraduate teaching and assessing student work.
  • Experience leading or supporting student engagement activities.
  • Experience of supporting and advising students with academic and/or personal matters.
  • Excellent communicator and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team


  • Experience of module leadership.

  • Fellowship (D2 minimum) of the HEA or equivalent


  • Postgraduate Degree (preferable in Education)
