The Role

 

As part of the School of Arts and Cultures, Media, Culture, Heritage (MCH) at Newcastle has an outstanding record of teaching and research. In the last REF, 82% of research submitted was rated ‘world leading' or 'internationally excellent’. Staff teach and conduct research across the subject area. The subject supports such work through its interdisciplinary approach to teaching, which regularly achieves excellent feedback at the NSS.

 

Currently, there are around 523 undergraduate and 289 taught postgraduate (MA) students and approximately 44 PhD students in our subject area. MCH performs extremely well in all national indicators and league tables, both for teaching and research. You will contribute to maintaining this strong profile.

 

The subject area offers the following degree programmes that you would be expected to support: BA (Hons) Media, Communication and Cultural Studies, MA Media and Journalism, MA Media and Public Relations and MA International Multi-media Journalism. The team also supervises a number of PhD students.

 

You should have experience of teaching in Public Relations that will provide cutting edge innovations to our Media and Public Relations curricula. This should incorporate historical and present day contexts through knowledge of professional practices in promotional cultures. Teaching and research in this field should incorporate critical analyses of promotional cultures and/or other disciplines relevant to public relations.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • A Lecturer in Public Relations will be responsible for teaching and supporting the continued development of our PGT courses in Media and Public Relations, as well as supporting the delivery of teaching on modules on our UG Media and Communications programmes.
  • Contributing to the curriculum development for postgraduate programmes in media and public relations
  • Contributing to existing MCH modules through lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, masterclasses, field trips and the supervision of Bachelor and Master’s students
  • Undertaking scholarship and practice activities at a level commensurate with a leading international university
  • Attract and supervise research postgraduates
  • Take on responsibility for administrative roles within Media, Culture, Heritage.

 

The Person (Essential)

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

  • Advanced knowledge and experience of the theory and practice of PR and communications internationally
  • Professional experience of working within the media and PR sector and working for, and with, public relations practitioners, ideally within an international context
  • The ability, knowledge and experience to expand the intellectual and critical study of public relations as an academic discipline relating to commercial, historical, cultural and political contexts
  • Experience of teaching in areas relevant but not limited to media, public relations, promotional cultures and corporate communication
  • Academic experience of teaching, scholarship and practices for public relations and communications to domestic and international students
  • Evidence of teaching which integrates PR theory and practice
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development
  • Demonstrable ability to contribute to and lead on the design, organisation and management of degree programmes
  • Demonstrable capacity to teach and engage in scholarship and practice activities in higher education
  • Familiarity with Virtual Learning Environments, for example Canvas
  • Experience of personal tutoring/pastoral care

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching international and political PR as well as crisis management at UG and PG level,
  • Experience of postgraduate research supervision, or a willingness to supervise in future
  • Familiarity with the training curriculum used by the CIPR or any other PR institute
  • Evidence of engagement in existing national and/or international networks and professional bodies within media and public relations
  • Experience of co-ordinating student placements with national and international industry partners
  • A record of achievement in HE teaching administration

  • Ability to contribute to the management and administration of degree programmes

Qualifications

 

  • BA honours, an MA and a PhD degree in a relevant subject e.g. in Communications or Public Relations or a field related to the Media Culture Heritage subject area or equivalent research/professional experience in these fields
  • A willingness to study for an HE teaching qualification
