The Role

This faculty position is based within the School of Computing, located in Newcastle University’s Urban Sciences Building. The position will see you become an active member of Open Lab, one of the school’s research groups.  Open Lab is a world-leading Interaction Design and Ubiquitous Computing research group with a reputation for cutting edge research in the human-centred design of digital technologies, and is comprised of a team of 70+ researchers (including 7 academic staff). Open Lab is at the forefront of research in the area of digital social innovation and currently host an EPSRC Digital Economy Research Centre (DERC) and Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Digital Civics. The lab is highly interdisciplinary, and supports a broad portfolio of collaborative research. Alongside conducting and leading pioneering research, you will also contribute significantly to the development and delivery of a new portfolio of interaction design/ubiquitous computing courses.

We are keen to diversify the Lab’s strengths, and welcome applicants with an excellent record of scholarship in any of the following areas:

  • Sustainable HCI – interaction design to support environmental and/or social sustainability
  • Human-Building Interaction – human responses to smart embedded systems and/or sensor-based platforms in the built environment
  • AI/Machine Learning for human centred systems
  • Collaborative technologies / participatory media platforms


In this role, you will conduct research of the highest standard, develop a strong international profile, secure funding, work with colleagues on the delivery of courses, including the development of new programmes in interaction design.

We are looking for candidates who have the potential to:

  • Undertake and publish independent research of an international standard in areas that will complement and/or extend our current portfolio of research within the group; and to seek external funding for this work;
  • Work collaboratively and as a team member with the staff and students within both Open Lab and the wider School of Computing;
  • Lead and coordinate teaching development and delivery of courses within the school, and in particular in relevant areas of interaction design / ubiquitous computing;
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of programmes at all levels, including initially a new interaction design-focused MSc programme;
  • Contribute to the recruitment and supervision of students and to the expansion and creation of new programmes;
  • Carry out appropriate impact and engagement activities with academic, educational, learned/professional and industry partners and the general public, for the benefit of the discipline and the University;
  • Contribute to School, Faculty or university groups or initiatives, as appropriate.

  • In-depth subject knowledge/expertise in a relevant area
  • Publications in leading peer-reviewed conferences and journals
  • A developing international reputation in the discipline

  • Highly developed planning and organisational skills
  • Track record of successful project completion
  • Evidence of a developing international standing in research
  • Experience of teaching relevant subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Evidence of ability to win funds to support research from major funding agencies (Essential for Senior Lecturer, Desirable for Lecturer)


  • Counselling skills and pastoral care where appropriate
