The Role



Based at Avery Dennison, Cramlington, you will help to achieve a Knowledge Transfer Partnership’s objectives to equip the company with the knowledge and capability for valorisation of plastic waste streams, by developing new approaches and procedures for the recovery of chemicals that can be used to produce new polymer materials.

You will be a graduate in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering ideally with an Engineering (Process)/Scientific background who can demonstrate and develop their abilities in process modelling and control, project management, improving plant performance, materials science, process systems and development, management systems/tools and waste management.  It would be desirable if you are with or nearing completion of an MPhil/PhD.

The KTP Associate will be an employee of Newcastle University but will spend most of their working time at the company’s premises at Nelson Way, Nelson Park, East Cramlington, Northumberland, NE23 1JR and when required at Newcastle University depending upon the project’s objectives. Although the contract is fixed term for a duration of 20 months, more than 70% of KTP staff are made a permanent job offer by their KTP company.

This is a full-time, fixed term position for a duration of 20 months.

As part of our commitment to career development for research staff, the University has developed 3 levels of

Key Tasks



  • On boarding to the project including familiarisation with facilities, completion of mandatory training and creation of a document repository
  • Develop, test, investigate, analyse and report results of new methodologies
  • Identify best solution and transfer and embed the established methods within the company via presentations and delivery of workshops
  • Identify market/commercialisation opportunities
  • Disseminate and embed the knowledge within Avery Dennison throughout the KTP via reports, presentations, group discussions, staff training
  • Present findings to stakeholders prepare and complete full documentation
  • Disseminate research via scientific publications and conferences

  • Experience of process modelling and control
  • Knowledge of process systems and development
  • Experience of project management
  • Experience/knowledge of improving plant performance
  • Materials science experience
  • Knowledge of management systems/tools
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis/modelling techniques and data acquisition/processing systems
  • Good laboratory skills
  • Good level of technical competency
  • Evidence of originality, innovation and creativity
  • Good presentation and written skills, including the delivery of training
  • Ability to prepare conference papers and journal articles (Desirable)
