Reporting directly to the Pro Vice Chancellor for the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering (SAgE), the Head of School will provide strategic leadership and management to the School, enabling it to achieve its strategic ambitions. The Head of School will play a critical role as a member of the Faculty Executive Leadership Team and will help to shape cross-faculty policy. They shall also work across the entire University to build relationships and identify synergies and opportunities for collaboration.


The School of Engineering is large with roughly 445 FTE, around 3,200 students and a broad range of disciplines including: Chemical Engineering, Civil and Geospatial Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology. The School has made significant advances in recent years on both the climate change and sustainable energy agendas. The incoming Head of School will need to foster opportunities for interdisciplinarity and focus on improving the student experience within the School. They will work closely with senior professional and academic colleagues to create a culture of enablement, transparency and collaboration where all colleagues and students can flourish.


The successful candidate will possess significant leadership experience in complex environments. They will be an excellent external and internal ambassador for the School, capable of building relationships at all levels. They will have a successful track-record of leading organisational and cultural change. The role will require excellent communication and negotiation skills, as well as fine judgement, and excellent emotional intelligence. The ideal candidate would be engaging, collegiate, flexible and ambitious in their approach. They will also bring a successful track record of leading and empowering teams and a credible research profile.
