The Role

This is a one to two year 0.20 FTE post for a nurse, allied health professional or pharmacist working in primary care to help develop non-GP teachers to deliver aspects of GP placements within the MBBS curriculum. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and vibrant group of GP educationalist at this exciting time of expansion of GP undergraduate teaching at Newcastle University.  Salary will be matched to current clinical NHS salary scale.

Key Accountabilities


As this will be a developmental post, the post holder will be expected to complete the Newcastle University Certificate in Medical Education (or the Diploma or Masters, or alternative if the Certificate/Diploma/Masters has already been obtained). There will be financial support of course fees and other development needs.

The appointee will join the primary care team of General Practice lecturers (GPLs) and GP teaching fellows at the School of Medical Education, led by Dr Hugh Alberti (Sub-dean for Primary and Community Care). The successful candidate will:

-    review current teaching delivered by nurses/AHPs in primary care in the MBBS curriculum,
-    explore and investigate how other Schools, within the University and nationally, involve nurses/AHPs in their community teaching,
-    develop training of nurses/AHP teachers in primary care,
-    develop a strategy to involve more primary care nurses/AHPs in teaching within the MBBS programme.

In addition, the role may include:
-    Delivering teaching to medical students based at the medical school and in primary care,
-    Developing and helping to steer the development of the new curriculum to ensure a generalist approach, 
-    More broadly be involved in other aspects of education such as exam marking, case writing, etc,
-    Be involved in educational research that support undergraduate GP teaching in the curriculum. 

Specific tasks will include:
•    To manage own teaching, scholarly and administrative activities,
•    To teach as a member of the team,
•    Carrying out teaching within a clear and established programme,
•    Developing own teaching materials,
•    Contributing to decisions affecting the work of the primary care team.

Outside of this posts sessions, it is expected that the candidate will be undertaking relevant clinical work within primary care.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

Knowledge (inc. Qualifications)
•    Relevant nursing/AHP/pharmacists degree/qualification,
•    Current registration with relevant body and licence to practise,
•    Evidence of interest in teaching,
•    Knowledge of the MBBS curriculum.

•    Evidence of experience in teaching,
•    Aspiration to develop as a clinical academic,
•    Educational qualification.

Skills (professional, technical, managerial, practical)
•    Good team working skills and ability to collaborate with other disciplines,
•    Effective communication and interpersonal skills,
•    Effective organisational skills,
•    Evidence of interest in teaching.
