Salary: £23,144 - £24,285, with progression to £26,396 per annum

The Role

 

Responsible for coordinating all activities relating to student employment off campus to ensure that they are delivered in a professional, customer focussed and efficient manner. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to; graduate recruitment activity, development of our part time jobs provision, facilitating internship schemes, vacancy advertising, ensuring compliance with current employment legislation and student and employer liaison.

 

The Careers Service at Newcastle University is responsible for providing support and delivering activities to enhance the employability of current students and recent graduates, regardless of background.

Working in the Business Engagement team you will support with building employer relationships to increase our students’ opportunities to secure placement and graduate employment, and proactively establish Newcastle as a University of choice for recruiters.

You will liaise with students and employers in relation to our internship programme. You will proactively seek internships with businesses in hard-to-reach sectors, facilitate employer meetings, coordinate student skills sessions, support with student bursary payments and lead on the advertising and promotion of our internships scheme to students.

A big part of the role will be to grow the provision of part time work we have on offer for students at Newcastle University. This will involve developing new relationships with local businesses, organising our annual Part time and Volunteering fair in partnership with our Students Union, facilitating drop ins as well as overseeing the approval of part time vacancies added to our employer portal.

To be successful in this role you should be dedicated to providing a high level of customer service to external stakeholders, demonstrate high levels of accuracy and attention to detail, have good organisational and communication skills and be a flexible and collaborative colleague.

Key Accountabilities

  • Act as the main point of contact for all part time activity and focus on increasing the number of part-time work-related opportunities available to students whilst they are studying
  • Proactively seek new relationships & develop existing ones with Northeast businesses looking to recruit part time talent
  • Coordinating a Part Time and Volunteering fair in partnership with the Students Union; facilitating the event, attracting businesses to exhibit and supporting the Marketing & Events team in Careers to promote the event to students
  • Act as a main point of contact for the Employer Liaison team coordinating our student internship schemes alongside the Internships Manager which includes recruitment advertising, marketing and promotion of opportunities, managing application deadlines, shortlisting applicants, providing feedback to successful and unsuccessful candidates and matching appropriately skilled students to workplace assignments
  • Coordinate the employer and student relationship during internship assignments to ensure that everything is progressing satisfactorily. To provide a first point of contact for issues that may arise, ensuring resolution where possible
  • Organise and manage student & employer end point meetings including follow up skills sessions and training and development opportunities as well as upskilling our services to employers
  • Work with colleagues to coordinate and deliver a programme of outreach activity across the University to showcase Careers Service activities to as wide an audience as possible
  • Develop rapport with employers and students, face to face, over the telephone and by email, and to nurture and develop these ongoing relationships. This can include regular face to face meetings with students, offering support, guidance and advice when necessary, referring more complex queries to line managers as appropriate
  • Maintain appropriate databases, records and systems, including for external bodies, to evaluate student recruitment and internship programmes
  • Maintain and monitor financial systems, including coordinating purchase orders and invoices, ensuring that deadlines are met and budget controls are adhered to
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, including the analysis of recruitment and internship activity
  • Ensure that email and telephone queries are handled in a professional and timely manner, dealing with queries where possible and referring to others when necessary
  • With the guidance of more senior colleagues, proactively promote the varied options available to employers and students. These include on-campus events, recruitment fairs, opportunities to sponsor awards, advertising and events and vacancy advertising
  • Ensure that web, social media and other promotional materials are kept up to date in the post holder’s area of responsibility. This includes assisting with the generation of case studies
  • Undertake any other duties reasonably requested in the delivery of the Careers Service’s strategic objectives

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Strong MS Office skills
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines with a high level of accuracy
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Evidence of strong customer-focused approach
  • Clerical or administration experience in an office environment

Qualifications

  • Good level of literacy and numeracy.  English Language GCSE grade A-C or equivalent
