The role


You will join Newcastle University’s Psychological Therapies Training and Research Clinic delivering 1:1 Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and a group psychoeducation programme to undergraduates and postgraduates. You will work alongside qualified clinical psychologists from the DClinPsy programme and trainee therapists from the Postgraduate CBT diploma and DClinPsy programme on a site at the campus. You will receive high-quality supervision within the clinic, and will have the opportunity to get involved in evaluation and research within the university clinic setting.


The Psychological Therapies Training and Research Clinic sits within the School of Psychology in dedicated clinic rooms and provides evidence-based treatment to students at the University. Recent funding further enables us to provide a psychoeducation programme for targeted prevention of mental health difficulties in this population.

Key Accountabilities


  1. Psychological assessment of referrals from the Student Wellbeing Service to determine suitability for a course of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) at the Psychological Therapies Training and Research Clinic.
  2. Provide 1:1 face to face Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to students for common anxiety and depression presentations.
  3. Clinical supervision of trainee CBT therapists and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology trainees who are developing competence in CBT skills.
  4. In tandem with the project team and student representatives, play a role in developing two psychoeducation programmes – one for undergraduates and one for postgraduates.
  5. Delivery of the psychoeducation programmes and responsibility for data collection and outcomes monitoring.
  6. Attend the North East Integrated Care for Student Mental Health working group, to build strategic links with key NHS services to develop continuity of care between the University clinic and relevant NHS services for students who need a step up in care.
  7. Provide any necessary data for reports for the University’s Health and Wellbeing subcommittee about clinic activity and the ongoing delivery of the psychoeducation programmes. Ensure details of the clinic and psychoeducation programme are kept up to date on the Student Health and Wellbeing central information hub of wellbeing services available at the University.
  8. Attend regular clinical supervision.
  9. Support the development and conduct of service-based research and research projects. For example, by contributing ideas for projects, supervising students undertaking service-based research projects, assisting with recruitment to ongoing research projects involving clinic attenders.


The Person (Essential)

Kowledge, Skills and Experience
•    Experience conducting clinical assessments, risk assessments, planning and delivering CBT or 1:1 therapy is essential and experience working with older adolescents or young adults would be an advantage.
•    Ability to deliver education-based clinical interventions in group settings (e.g. psychoeducation groups) is essential and experience delivering groups of this nature would be an advantage.
•    Ability to supervise the clinical practice of others is essential and experience supervising trainee CBT therapists or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology trainees would be an advantage.
•    Ability and willingness to work in emotionally-charged situations and to support those with high levels of distress.
•    Demonstrable commitment to evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence, including a commitment to the use of routine outcome measures in clinical practice and other practice-based metrics.
•    Proficient in use of electronic record-keeping systems is essential and specific experience with IAPTus would be preferred.
•    Willingness and availability to work unsocial hours (evenings); occasional travel in the UK and/or overseas sometimes requiring overnight stays; receive Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

•    Relevant qualification as a practitioner psychologist or CBT therapist such as a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or postgraduate Diploma in CBT.
•    Current Health and Care Professions Council-registration as a practitioner psychologist and/or accreditation with the BABCP.
