The role


This post is available to current Newcastle University students only.


This student placement offers the opportunity to join the Digital Platforms team with working on Websites and Apps that enhance the student experience with specific responsibility for development of the University Mobile App and Microsoft Teams based Chat bots.


You will also contribute to the other activities of the team, which is responsible for the development, integration and management of the tools, technologies and applications that enable and enhance collaboration, communication, learning, teaching and research.


To take this opportunity, you will need some experience of working with others on projects, a knowledge of JavaScript, Web Services and Databases.


You should be able to evidence the ability to learn new technology quickly plus organizational and communication skills. Further technical skills, such as Angular, Typescript, C#, PHP and SQL, are desirable.


This is a fixed term post for 14 months commencing July 2020 and offers valuable work experience to students of relevant disciplines who are looking for a 3rd year placement.

Key Accountabilities


Assist in the design, development and support of applications that enable and enhance the student experience, learning and teaching (notably, our Mobile App) in line with the strategic requirements of Newcastle University and NUIT.


  • Take specific responsibility for the development and support of the University Mobile App and related Web Applications.
    • Research and evaluate the potential of new technologies for the provision of new features or upgrades to apps and websites relating to the student experience (maps, timetables, etc).
    • Contribute to the development teams testing and quality assurance processes. Maintain the application documentation to enable handover to other members of the team.
    • Manage assigned system developments to time and within any set resource constraints, including the management of issues, scope and risks.
    • Develop applications to meet agreed requirements, carry out test preparation and execution, including unit and integration testing. To plan, document and run unit and integration test cases to ensure that the app works as per the agreed design.
    • Assist in the co-ordination of customer testing and co-ordinate requirements capture from our customers.
    • Contribute to the service and support responsibilities of the team and liaison with the Service Desk.

Perform administrative duties as appropriate including representing the team at meetings, membership of committees and working groups.

You may be expected to work outside normal office hours due to the business critical nature of some aspects of the job.


The Person (Essential)


Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • Knowledge of: JavaScript/Typescript and related frameworks. Server side Scripting and Databases.
  • Analytical, good at problem solving
  • Customer focused and service orientated, with the ability to manage relationships effectively.
  • Able to work on own initiative, prioritise work and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of: PHP or Node.js, SQL and Web Service, Ionic Framework or Angular, Google Cloud (Firebase) or similar cloud providers.


  • An understanding of Accessibility and User Experience Principles as it relates to Web and Mobile App Development.
  • Experience of working with version control software such as Subversion.
