Salary:  £84,559 to £95,144, per annum starting salary to £110,683.

The Role 


This is an exciting opportunity for a clinician to play a major role in delivering, co-ordinating and directing undergraduate medical teaching at the NUMed Malaysia campus and to have the option of continuing with clinical duties within the Malaysian health service.


We are looking for an experienced clinical teacher with current NHS experience, who wishes to share their enthusiasm and clinical knowledge with the doctors of the future being trained in Malaysia.  This post is specifically for consideration by consultants in Psychiatry. Clinical teaching will take place at the NUMed Malaysia campus, Ministry of Health Hospitals, community health centres and other clinical facilities in the state of Johor, Malaysia. 

 

The post is for 3 years with the option to extend for another 2 years depending on the business needs, aiming to commence in September 2022.

Key Accountabilities 

Teaching:
•    Provide clinical teaching to undergraduate medical students in a number of hospitals and clinics across the State of Johor
•    Act as an examiner on the MBBS programme, and to undertake wider responsibilities, for example in developing the course, course materials, assessment questions, and acting as pastoral and personal tutor for students

Research:
•    Work independently and, in collaboration, to undertake high quality research in line with the NUMed research strategy
•    In line with the above to create and maintain, strong collaborative links with other researchers in Newcastle and to develop collaborative links with national and international colleagues working in the same area of research
•    Bid independently and/or in collaboration with colleagues for research funding
•    Publish in high impact peer reviewed journals and to present findings/research papers at national and international conferences.
•    Contribute to the Malaysian Research Assessment (MyRA)

Clinical Duties:
•    Work in the relevant departments. In performance of clinical duties, you will be under the direction of the appropriate Hospital Head of Department, in conjunction with the Dean for Clinical Affairs. Clinical duties will largely be combined with clinical teaching, on ward rounds and in clinics
•    Have full clinical responsibility for patients, as negotiated with the Heads of Departments, and in liaison with clinical colleagues
•    Participate fully in departmental business processes, audit, governance, and continuing medical education

 

The Person 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
•    Experience of working in the UK National Health Service within the last 6 months
•    Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement and to prioritise clinical need
•    Demonstrates appropriate technical competence & evidence of development of excellent diagnostic skills and judgement
•    Demonstrates relevant core competencies or equivalent
•    Validated documentation of clinical exposure to date.
•    Evidence of experience in general / emergency medicine at post registration level
•    Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues. Proficiency in English may be demonstrated by one of the following:

  • that applicants have undertaken undergraduate and postgraduate medical training in English; or
  • have the following minimum scores in the academic lnternational English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Overall 7.5, Speaking 7.5, Listening 7.5, Reading 7.5, Writing 7.5.

•    Shows aptitude for practical skills, e.g. hand-eye co-ordination, dexterity, visuo-spatial awareness
•    Attendance at relevant courses, e.g. ALS, ATLS, or equivalent
•    Evidence of a commitment to a career in clinical teaching
•    Evidence of contributing to teaching & learning of others in a UK Medical School in the last 6 months
•    Interest and enthusiasm for teaching
•    Evidence of a range of aspects of programme management in a UK medical school
•    Demonstrates an understanding of the basic principles of audit, quality improvement, clinical risk management and evidence-based practice

•    Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment (Desirbale)
•    Evidence of participation in teacher development (Desirbale)
•    Evidence of relevant academic achievements, e.g. degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations, other achievements (Desirbale)
•    Evidence of active participation in audit and risk management (Desirbale)
•    Demonstrates knowledge of Newcastle University curriculum (Desirbale)
•    Demonstrates awareness of ethical principles, safety, confidentiality, consent and clinical governance (Desirbale)

Qualifications

•    MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification from a medical school recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC)
•    Successful completion of a higher qualification with the necessary clinical experience to allow registration on the national specialist Register in Malaysia e.g.  MRCPsych or completion of a Malaysian Masters Program
•    Eligible for full registration with the MMC at time of appointment
•    Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by time of appointment in line with MMC & GMC standards / Good Medical Practice

•    Specialty Diploma, Higher Examination or equivalent (Desirbale)
•    Academic qualification in Medical Education (Desirbale)
•    Relevant higher degree such as MD or PhD (Desirbale)
•    Formal postgraduate qualification in teaching (Desirbale)
