The Role

 

Do you want to work alongside students to support our local community? Our pro bono schemes offer students the opportunity to work alongside lawyers in the community to provide support and information on legal issues. We are looking for candidates who are organised with excellent interpersonal skills to join the Professional Services Team in Newcastle Law School.

 

You will undertake a variety of administrative tasks to support the student experience, focussing on the school’s Pro Bono projects. You will also provide additional support for events and projects in Newcastle Law School, including estates development and research engagement events.

 

This role is offered fixed term until 31 March 2025 on a part time basis of 0.8FTE.

 

Interviews are expected to take place w/c 17 June.

Key Accountabilities

Pro Bono Projects Support and Administration

  • Coordinate the School’s Pro Bono projects, liaising with pro bono students and external partners
  • Organise events and activities related to Pro Bono projects
  • Help organise and attend the Pro Bono Steering Group; working with the relevant academic lead and external partners to develop new opportunities and initiatives
  • Ensure Pro Bono information and content for communications is accurate and current

Project and Events Support

  • Support the School’s widening participation and schools outreach activity along with other colleagues
  • Support the Student Recruitment Strategy & Student Experience Coordinator with estates projects to improve the student experience within the Law School
  • Support the Research Impact & Engagement Coordinator with research seminars and events

Other Duties

  • Administration of the annual prizes awarded by the Boards of Examiners, including notifying students, external awarding firms and sponsors, and NU Advancement, preparation of payment forms
  • Assist with the registration on the university’s SAP system of University of Law students as Associate Students
  • Maintain and update student files throughout the year and following BoE progression, ensuring relevant information is available to personal tutors
  • Maintain school mail base lists
  • Other duties commensurate with the grade as required

 

The Person 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrable relevant experience of administrative work
  • Good interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a range of stakeholders both internal and external to the organisation
  • Demonstrable experience of using MS Office including Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Ability to learn new processes and procedures including use of new IT systems

 

Attributes and Behaviour

  • Ability to organise self and tasks, prioritising where necessary in response to deadlines
  • Ability to communicate clearly in person, on the phone and in writing.
  • Ability to adapt work priorities to accommodate where necessary wider school or external partner's needs and circumstances
  • Ability and willingness to support colleagues during busy periods, such as induction week

 

Qualifications

  • Good general education, at least GCSE Grade A-C or equivalent, plus some experience in a relevant role OR 1-2 years’ relevant work experience
